Article by asparagus contest entrant
ContraCostaTimes.com has an article by Eric Louie about his participation in the asparagus eating contest last week. There are several quotes from winner Joey Chestnut:
“A lot of it’s building up tolerance,” says Chestnut, a down-to-earth 6-foot-1-inch 230-pound civil engineering college student from San Jose. Talking with me after the contest, Chestnut, 23, shows none of the arrogance that typifies competitors at the top of their game. He even apologizes for drinking my water during the competition.
To him, being a successful competitive eater is “really mental.” And he’s right, I learned. The food will fit, but the key is being able to resist gagging, which is kind of the body’s shut-off valve. The truth is, even as I was stuffing my face with more asparagus than many people eat in a season, my stomach was only at a third of my capacity. While the thought of eating and burps that taste of oily batter ruined my appetite until the next day, I did not throw up, or have to let loose in any way at a festival porta potty.

Famous Vallejo residents & the Asparagus Festival
Joey Chestnut and Sly Stone, founder of Sly and the Family Stone, are two famous former residents of Vallejo, California. Joey Chestnut will be competing in the asparagus eating contest tomorrow and The Original Family Stone (which presumably lacks Sly Stone, but probably contains original members of his group) will be performing at the festival today.
Asparagus Festival expected entrants
Recordnet has a preview of Saturday’s asparagus eating contest at the Stockton asparagus festival. Erik Denmark, Jason Erb, Kevin Ross, David Braunstein, Jonathan Quok and Eric Louie are listed as expected entrants along with defending champion Joey Chestnut.
St Patrick’s Day Chowdown finals video
Jim Driscoll attended the Saint Patrick’s Day Chowdown and wrote a blog entry about it and filmed a video of the final contest between Patrick Bertoletti and Joey Chestnut.
Joey Chestnut interview in San Jose Mercury
MercuryNews.com has an interview with Joey Chestnut conducted at Iguanas Taqueria, where Joey began his competitive eating career. Joey says that the first place prize for the St. Pat’s Day Chowdown will be $15,000 and the corned beef contest will be 10 minutes. Joey also says he received that amount after declining the car he won for winning Wing Bowl 15.
Chestnut developed his throat and stomach muscles. They’re fast and powerful. He’s perfected his eating rhythm. He practices mind over matter, whether the matter is boiled, broiled, barbecued or deep fried.
And he’s been on the big stage before. Chestnut says he chewed through 25 contests last year and won about $60,000. When he won a chicken-wing contest in February, they offered him a car. “No thanks,” he said. “I just ate.”
Kidding. He took $15,000 cash instead.
