Japanese buffet weight gain contest
Deresque has a blog entry with a lot of pictures from a lunch last month he had with 13 other competitive eating friends at the Grand Buffet Hawaiian Island in Tokyo. The fourteen eaters were grouped into 7 two person teams and each member was weighed before and after eating lunch at the buffet. The team with the highest combined weight gain was proclaimed the winner.
The top 5 single person weight gains were:
1. Takuya Yamamoto, 23.76 lb. / 10.8 kg (54.3 kg -> 65.1 kg), on #1 team
2. Mio “Sakura” Takahashi 15.2 lb. / 6.9 kg (31.3. kg -> 38.2 kg), on #2 team
3. Tomoko Miyake, 14.3 lb. / 6.5 kg (38.2 kg -> 44.7 kg) on #2 team
4. Asami “Essen” Miyanishi, 13.4 lb. / 6.1 kg (unlisted start & finish) on #3 team
5. Yamaguchi 12.32 lb. / 5.6 kg (60.6 kg -> 66.2 kg), on #1 team
Sakura Takahashi had the highest percentage weight gain, 38.2 / 31.3 = 22%, edging out Takuya Yamamoto, 65.1 / 54.3 = 20%
Wanko soba contests in Hot Springs and NY
From breitbart.com
The city of Hanamaki in Iwate Prefecture will host the region’s famous “wanko-soba” noodle-eating competition in two U.S. cities, according to city officials.
In the competition, participants will eat as many bite-size portions of buckwheat noodles in a lacquered bowl as possible in a limited time. A champion from a February competition held in the city finished 225 bowls of noodles in five minutes.
The competition is also popular in the Iwate capital of Morioka.
The city will host the events in the Arkansas city of Hot Springs, a sister city of Hanamaki, on Wednesday, and in New York on Saturday, where the association of Iwate expatriates marked the 10th anniversary.
I have not been able to find any details online about the Arkansas or New York contests.

Canady/Menchetti ticket wins Rhode Island

The Kent County Times has an article about the pumpkin contest in Rhode Island between mixed gender pairs from the United States and Japan which describes the origin of the event:
Emi Umeda, who works with the production crew, said the name of the show translates to “Anything is possible,” and she said the point of the show is to take a topic, find who’s best in the world at it and challenge them to a contest against Japan.
One of the topics is a pumpkin-eating contest, she said, which will pit two professional American eaters against two professional Japanese eaters, making their way through five different pumpkin dishes.
In order to get started, the show wanted to find who held the record for growing the largest pumpkin in the world, which happened to be Coventry resident Ron Wallace, who owns a farm at 860 Plainfield Pike.
The American female made her competitive debut according to the article:
The Japanese contestants are Tomoko Miyake and Nobuyuki Shirota and the American contestants are “Gentleman” Joe Menchetti of Wallingford, Conn., and Elizabeth “Rubber Gut” Kennedy from Florida.
“This is my first time doing this,” Kennedy said. “I made some inquiries on the Internet just out of curiosity and interest and they gave me a call.”
The article verifies reports of a US victory:
Since it may be difficult for American viewers to tune into the show to see the results, St. Jean said the American team ended up easily outpacing the team from Japan.
update BigPumpkins.com has some pictures of the contest (bottom of page) One of the pictures is captioned:
At the Wallaces on August 21, 2007, Gentleman Joe, urges his teamate to down more Pumpkin Lobster and Pumpkin pizza. She ate an entire Large Pumpkin Pizza and 2 lb Pumpkin Lobster in 3 minutes. But that was just the appetizer.
update #2 The BigPumpkins.com message board has some threads about the contest: Thread 1, Thread 2, Thread 3
update #3 Dec 26, 2007 The quoted article spelled Elizabeth’s last name incorrectly. The correct spelling is Canady.
AICE news reports US duo wins 4 of 5 RI pumpkin contests
From AICE news:
As predicted by Chairman Chowhound Chapman, Gentleman Joe Menchetti and Elizabeth “Rubber-Gut” Cassidy defeated the great Shirota and Miyake in decisive fashion at the Wallace Pumpkin Farm in Rhode Island. It seems that Gentleman Joe Menchetti who cannot be beaten by man or beast in the pumpkin disciplines and the unknown “Queen Guttress” (stay tuned America, you will be finding out more about this amazing female Eater in the near future) put down the proverbial hammer as they won four of the five contests.
“Gluttonous King” rookie women’s qualifier videos

A space in this fall’s “Gluttonous King” contest has been reserved for a novice female competitor. The qualifier for this slot, which was won by Mio “Sakura” Takahashi, can be viewed at http://youtube.com/user/euromach2 Gal Sone serves as a co-MC.
Environmentalist eater emerges
R Suzuki reports that Sakura Takahashi won a qualifer for a spot this fall’s “Gluttonous King” contests which was restricted to novice females. In her blog, Ms. Takahashi announces that she intends to use her prominence as a competitive eater to promote environmental awareness: (automatically translated)
As for me, the habit of being connected to protecting such terrestrial environment, it has becoming aware first in everyone, and that really it can have practicing, doing the kind of activity which is appealed to keep it would like, that thinks that anyone can practice simply.
“Gluttonous Queens” post-contest blogging
Tomoko Miyake has written several blog entries about the “Gluttonous Queen” contest televised last Sunday in which she was the runner-up. While competing, Tomoko befriended 6th place finisher Saori Nakayama (仲山沙織), who blogged about her experiences in that event at http://blog.livedoor.jp/nakayama_saori1980/.
Introducing Gal Ikeda (ギャル æ± ç”° 亜紀)
(Image from ken-blo)
Natsuko “Gal” Sone was not the only entrant in Sunday’s “Gluttonous Queen” contest with dyed blonde hair. Aki Ikeda, who has the nickame Gal Ikeda (ギャル æ± ç”° 亜紀) also sported non-natural hair coloring (she also has the nickname girayunee (ギャルãƒã‚¨) ). Ikeda finished 5th overall and reportedly is missing a front tooth, which might facilitate bone stripping in a chicken wing eating contest.
Gluttonous Queen II received a 14.2% TV share
TVRaiting.blog77.fc2.com reports that yesterday’s showing of “Gluttonous Queen II” received a 14.2% audience share. This compares favorably to the audience shares received by the current NCAA college basketball tournament (10% – 16% according to zap2it.com
Gal Sone repeats as “Gluttonous Queen”, Tomoko Miyake 2nd

herpdaddy watched last night’s “Gluttonous Queen II” contest and wrote a blog entry in English about it (he also has some funny Japanese T shirts with English on them in his post.) He reports about the final noodle contest:
So she made it to the final round with 2 other women both equally thin and the final round was ramen noodles. Mmmm. I mean, it’s GOOD but how much can you really eat? Apparently an incredible amount. Each serving was a standard sized serving but they got a break. So they don’t burn themselves, they did not have to drink the soup. But they did have to eat all of the noodles and the major toppings including a thin slice of Chinese roast pork.
I have to admit, I was glued to the TV. I mean, it’s just 3 girls pigging out but it was just amazing how much they were able to put away.
In the end, Gal Sone won for the 2nd year in a row with 16 bowls of ramen in 1 hour. Eeeeeeeeesh…
Tomoko Miyake came in second (possibly tying with another woman) with 14 bowls. I believe that Suguwara was removed by medical personel (like “The Artist” was in last fall’s gluttonous king contest), but I am not sure about that. Hopefully R Suzuki will have a full writeup.

“Gluttonous Queen 2007” being recorded in Hawaii
A Japanese blogger is currently on vacation in Hawaii, and s/he saw a television crew recording Natsuko “Gal” Sone competing in the “Gluttonous Queen” contest on Waikiki Beach. The contest will be televised later this month or in April. It is too bad that apparently no American women were invited to compete.
Exactly recording the gluttonous king decisive game being done at the Waikiki beach, it increased.
The gal 曽 root it was.
