MouthBySouthwest.com reports that Gus Beisel ate 18 slices of pizza to edge Jeff Butler and claim the $500 first prize at Flancers Pizza in Gilbert, AZ today.
Flancer's Pizza in Gilbert, AZ will hold its annual pizza eating contest awarding $500 to the winner on April 14.

Michelle "Cardboard Shell" Lesco is raising money for Equine Voices Rescue and Sanctuary and will do an on-air mac & cheese contest on KFMA Friday to promote her fundraising. If she raises more than $950, she will post a weekly video of a hot dog training session until she exceeds 31.5 hot dogs in 10 minutes. update March 8 A video of the mac & cheese contest is available.

2012-13 college football bowl eating contests

Several college football bowls held eating contests as part of their pre-game activities:

  • Rose Bowl (Pasadena, CA) Wisconsin defended their Lawry’s Beef Bowl title by eating a total of 619 pounds of prime rib to defeat Stanford by 17 pounds. Joshua Garnett and Dallas Lewallen of Wisconsin were reportedly the individual winners with 7 24-ounce steaks eaten.
  • Chick-fil-A Bowl (Atlanta) LSU outate Clemson at Sal Grosso’s Brazillian Steakhouse by 624 pounds to 454
  • Music City Bowl (Nashville) NC State outate Vanderbilt by 19 ribs. NC State’s Rogers Clark ate 21 ribs in 2 minutes to win the individual contest.
  • Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl (Tempe, AZ) Michigan State ate an average of 33 wings per player to defeat TCU by a margin of 13. MSU’s Shawn Kamm was the individual winner with 65 wings.
  • Outback Bowl (Tampa) Ashton Tate of South Carolina ate 8 mini key lime pies to defeat Michigan’s Ben Braden by 3 pies.

Jeff Butler won today's Battle of the Bone 5 finals in Scottsdale, AZ and will receive a trip to the Super Bowl as his prize.
There are two remaining qualifiers for Battle of the Bone 5: one tonight in Casa Grande, AZ, the other in Avondale, AZ on Thanksgiving Eve. The overall winner of the Phoenix area wing circuit on December 8 will receive at trip to the Super Bowl.
Coach & Willie's in Phoenix will hold a hot dog eating contest on Sunday awarding up to $300 on Sunday. Qualifiers will be held on Friday and Saturday.
Sir Veza's in Tucson will hold a Sonoran hot dog eating contest on Sunday awarding $500 to the winner. Stephanie Torres won last year's contest.

Eating contests held throughout football season

Several restaurants are holding eating contests that will take place throught football season:

  • Battle of the Bone 5 – Phoenix area Native New Yorker restaurants – qualifiers will take place on Wednesdays throughout football season – finals December 8 will award a trip to the Super Bowl
  • Court Jester’s – Aberdeen & Freehold, NJ – Weekly hot wing eating qualifiers during Monday Night Football – finals during Super Bowl will award $1750 ($1000 to winner)
  • Smoke City Market – Sherman Oaks, CA qualify for Jan 27 contest by eating rack of ribs
  • Two Stones Pub – Newark, DE – 10 patrons who eat most foot long hot dogs will get a spot in a Super Bowl party
  • The Whiskey Barrel – Gloucester City, NJ – weekly hot dog eating qualifiers will be held during Monday Night Football, final will be held during Super Bowl

A website for the 2012 Battle of the Bone has been set up at http://battleofthebone5.weebly.com/. Weekly qualifiers will be held on Wednesdays at Phoenix area Native New Yorker restaurants starting September 5 in Gilbert, AZ. The finals on December 8 will award a trip to the Super Bowl in New Orleans.
"Cardboard Shell" has a report on the Tempe qualifier. She will resume her fundraising for Charity Water for the Nathan's finals, where her goals will be 27 hot dogs.

"Cardboard Shell" has a blog entry about how her goal to eat more than 25 hot dogs at the Tempe, AZ Nathan's qualifier ties in with her efforts to raise money for Sudanese charity.

Stephanie Torres is dressed appropriately for the National Spring Break Eating Championship. The contest received coverage on the front page of the local paper.
