Philly vs. IFOCE 4 on 4 in Wing Bowl 18?

Dan Gross’ column on philly.com mentions George Shea’s appearance on 610 WIP last week and says that the proposed contest in which 4 IFOCE members would face off against 4 Philly-area eaters would take place in Wing Bowl 18 next year if it occurs.

Cataldi on WB 18: “pros contribute very little”

Angelo Cataldi’s most recent blog entry reports that the return of IFOCE eaters to the Wing Bowl in 2010 is not a certainty:

The big question now is whether to open the event back up to the professional eaters next year. I may not have to make that decision since my contract runs out before the next Wing Bowl, but my inclination right now is to keep them out. The pros contribute very little to the actual event. They rarely bother to prepare a procession, they have little or no personality, and they detract from the original intent of Wing Bowl, which is to turn an average Joe into Rocky Balboa for a day. Any input from the listeners and Wing Bowl patrons is welcome here.

Wing Bowl 17 doubles philly.com traffic

The PhillyDeal$ blog reports that philly.com received 4.1 million online readers on the day of Wing Bowl 17, more than twice the normal amount. The only other event to produce more traffic to the website was the Phillies recent World Series victory.

WB 17 cottage cheese stunts accepted & rejected

A list of DelawareOnline’s 8 most intriguing people of 2008 details the thwarting of Jeff “The Natural” Olson’s plans to compete in Wing Bowl 17:

At this year’s WIP Wingbowl, Jeff planned on qualifying with his stunt of eating three pounds of cottage cheese in three minutes. WIP rejected the stunt, however, saying it was a drinking stunt and not an eating stunt. (I’m not sure how the people at WIP consume their cottage cheese, but I certainly consider that a food.)

Apparently WIP had no such problems with the brand of cottage cheese Jon Squibb used, as he qualified by eating 6 pounds in 3 minutes after failing at his initial attempt

Wing Bowl 17 odds & roster released

610WIP.com has updated its Wing Bowl 17 page with the full list of competitors along with their odds. Damaging Doug is the favorite at 2-1 and Doug “Obi Wing” Petock is the long shot at ∞-1 odds. Damaging Doug is also the heaviest competitor with a listed weight of 504 pounds. Larry “Blow Me” Norris is the lightest at 160 lbs.

Dan Gross’ Wing Bowl column
mentions the odds and catches up with Joey Chestnut’s former wingette, Tiffany Heller, who will sit out Wing Bowl 17. She says that she was secretly rooting for the underdog while she was assisting Joey Chestnut.

Gross also reports that Gentleman Jerry (listed odds: 3-1) says that this will be his final eating contest. The column says that Coughlan’s margin of defeat to Joey Chestnut in Wing Bowl 16 was 15 wings, which was the difference in Wing Bowl 15. The margin of defeat in last year’s Wing Bowl was over 100 wings

Tailgating information is provided at the end of the column:

The Wachovia Center has announced that parking lots open at 4 a.m. Friday and that tickets will be checked at the parking gates. Those without Wing Bowl tix will be turned away. FDR Park, across Broad Street from the sports complex, will be closed to tailgating, as will surrounding lots.

All patrons will be searched for contraband, and no outside food or beverages are permitted inside the Wachovia Center. Comcast-Spectacor has also asked that no fires be set in the parking lot.

The DelcoTimes has an article about “Gentleman Jerry” Coughlan and the PhillyBurbs blog has an entry about Nick “Chicken Caesar” Ventresca

Rick the Mangager article, web page, video & song

(From Sadie Carpenter & Carlos) The Hungry Sisters blog has an article about Rick “The Manager” Russo’s qualification for Wing Bowl 17. Russo served as Dave “The Dumpster” Moyer’s manager in previous Wing Bowls.

Badlands Booker wrote the theme song for Rick the Manager, which can be listened to on RickTheManager.com A myspace page is also available.

A video of Rick’s qualification stunt of eating 4 feet of sushi served on the bodies of two lingerie wearing females can be viewed on youtube. (This is not the first time sushi consumption off of a female body has been recorded; in The Surreal Life, MC Hammer, Emmanuel Lewis and Corey Feldman refuse to eat sushi served on a naked woman.)
