Austin veggie dog competitor report

Indiana James competed in the 2 person team vegetarian hot dog eating contest held in Austin, TX Saturday and wrote a blog entry about her experience. She ate 10.5 hot dogs in 12 minutes, a half hot dog more than her male teammate “Honeybun”. Their total of 20.5 hot dogs was good for second place. Fans of picnic style rules will be glad to know that apparently no teams took advantage of the blender.

“In second place, with 20 and a half, we have Honeybun and Indiana!” We smiled, happy that our prides were still in tact. The girl to my left was like, “OMG! I could only eat three!”

What’s cool is that for the rest of the day, I felt like a local celebrity. Everyone kept high fiving me, and asking me how many dogs I choked down. Even after we left, I was recognized. We made a stop over at End of an Ear to pick up the Voxtrot CD for Honeybun, and the clerk was all like “You were that girl from the hot dog contest!”

Bikini’s fry eating contest articles

chron.com has an interview with Joey Chestnut after he won the french fry eating contest at Bikini’s Bar & Grill:

He’s making a lot of money in prize winnings, appearance fees and frequent-flier miles. But he’s not getting rich, he says. He’s in it for the glory and good times.

“I live in San Jose, and it’s expensive. I’m paying for school. Plus, I like to party a lot. So the money goes pretty fast.”

The University Star also has an article about the contest.

The 8 lb Big Kahuna Burger & its $500 award

statesman.com has an article about the 8 lb. Big Kahuna Burger from Pancho and Lefty’s in Hare (suburban Austin) TX. The current award for finishing the burger in under three hours is $500. No eater has ever completed it. The article mentions Kate Stelnick’s reported completion of the 11 pound 96er and the skepticism it has engendered in the competitive eating community.

Kala Bowers, UTexas basketball

From the February 2, 2004 The Daily Texan (UTexas school paper) Defensive Stopper by Elizabeth McGarr:

“She [Kala Bowers] eats more than anybody I’ve ever been around,” Schreiber said. “Pretty much every two or three hours, she has to have a meal. Before practice, she’ll eat a buffet meal, then she’ll eat after practice, then she’ll eat again that night.

“At halftime, she’ll eat a Power Bar or something. In the four hours between pre-game and game time, she’ll go get McDonald’s because she’ll just get so hungry.”

You wouldn’t know it to look at Bowers’ trim six-foot-two-inch frame.

“I can eat probably all day, every day,” she admitted. “I don’t know what it is – I guess high metabolism – but I love to eat. Make any bet with me about food, and I’m going to be excited.”
