The Rafu Shimpo on the gyoza contest and Sonya Thomas
The Rafu Shimpo, a publication for Los Angeles Japanese Americans, has an article about last Saturday’s gyoza contest which contains an interview with Sonya Thomas. Sonya claims that her stomach capacity is now up to 18-20 pounds and that she never gets full. There is a funny picture of Queen of Nisei Week loooking at Sonya in disbelief. Joey Chestnut says he will do the rib contest in Reno on Wednesday.
Sonya to look for 3peat in Chattanooga Krystal qualifier
The Krystal lovers blog reports that Sonya will appear in Sunday’s Krystal qualifier in Chattanooga. She won that event in 2004 and 2005, winning last year’s contest by a single burger.
The preliminary qualifiers started today with Josh Neal having the best performance with 12 Krystals in 2 minutes. The calendar for the Chattanooga prequalifiers and qualifier lists the times the contests will be webcast.
HK Standard: Sonya eats almost 10 kg (22 lb.) of food each day
The Hong Kong standard has an article about Sonya Thomas’ victory at the Whampoa Asia eating contest. In that article, Sonya is quoted as saying she eats almost 10 kg (22 lb.) of food each day. If that is accurate, then Sonya eats her bodyweight every five days. Sonya’s big Burger King meal weighs a good deal less than 22 pounds, so it would be interesting to learn what else she eats to reach that amount.
Video podcast of Sonya in Hong Kong
The South China Morning Post has a brief (about one minute) video podcast of Sonya Thomas in the semifinals of the Whampoa Asia Eating Championship where she ate 176 vegetable dumplings in 12 minutes. The podcast can also be viewed on youtube.
London Telegraph profile of Sonya Thomas
The London Telegraph has a long profile of Sonya Thomas that includes an account of her appearance at the Asparagus Festival in April. The article implies Sonya won that contest and does not mention that Joey Chestnut was victorious in overtime.

Sonya Thomas at Wing Bowl 13 documentary on youtube
A clip of Jenny Drumgoole’s documentary about Sonya Thomas at Wing Bowl 13 has been uploaded to youtube. If the documentary will not be released theatrically or direct to DVD, I hope all segments will be available on youtube like the “Chili Dawg” documentary.
(I do not have broadband this week, so I have not watched the documentary and am not sure if it is safe for work)
Happy Birthday Sonya Thomas
Happy birthday to the greatest female competitive eater in history. (Birthday obtained from “Eat This Book”)
Possible Kobayashi impostor on myspace
A myspace page has been set up at myspace.com/takerukobayashi. It is rather unlikely that this page was set up by the actual Kobayashi given his lack of fluency in English.
The profile lists Kobayashi as a Sagitarius, when Kobayashi was born March 15, 1978.
A myspace page has also been set up at myspace.com/sonyathomas This is listed as a fan page and not Sonya’s personal page, but that disclaimer is not very prominent.
Sonya Thomas Severe Magazine interview posted
Jason has uploaded an interview of Sonya Thomas from Severe Magazine to his myspace blog.
Inaccurate female record in Nathan’s sign
The female record in the Nathan’s Wall of Fame is listed at 38 when it should be 37, which Sonya Thomas did the past two contest. The male record has already been updated to 53.7 (The sign only has one digit after the decimal point).

It will be interesting to see what extracurricular activities Dale Boone was involved in. Brian Seiken claims Boone and Loren “Bubba” Yarbrough almost came to blows in Memphis.
NBC4: Sonya Thomas to do NC Ribs
NBC4 (Washington DC local news) interviewed Sonya Thomas after Nathan’s, which is mentioned in the station’s blog. Sonya said that she intended to do Friday’s rib contest at Harrah’s casino in Cherokee, NC. Dale Boone is also expected to compete in that contest and interesting (in the Chinese curse meaning of the word) things tend to happen when those two compete. I don’t believe that Sonya has ever lost in VA, DC, MD, DE or NC.
