(from slashfood) The New York Times has an article about the Penthouse Executive Club, where Crazy Legs Conti works as a buyer. The article consists mainly of a review of Robert’s Steak House inside the club. Frank Bruni only gives the restaurant one star despite his claim that it has some of the best steaks in New York City. A slideshow is available.

(From slashfood) Yahoo News has an AFP article about an Indian woman’s quest for a Guinness world record:
Anandita Dutta Tamuly, a 26-year-old mother, is headed from Assam to London at the invitation of the record-noting institution to see how many Bhut Jolokia peppers, native to the state, she can eat at one sitting.
Tamuly, who hails from a remote village, believes she will have little trouble in beating the previous record, set by South African Anita Crafford, who ate eight jalapenos in a minute in 2002.
The Bhut Jolokia peppers are 100 times hotter than a jalapeno. The government of Assam is helping sponsor Ms. Tamuly’s trip. (Critics of competitive eating would probably say that subsidy could be better spent on the poor of India 😉 )

The Clearfield Progress has an article about the unveiling of Denny’s Beer Barrel Pub’s 123 pound burger. The burger took 6-8 hours to cook and a heat shield had to be installed on the oven. The burger meat will be used in chili and other non-burger items.
The article also mentions the UEPa meeting, the German television crew and Ian Hickman breaking the 2 lb burger record. The previous record of 15 minutes was set by Daryl Teats of Woodland, PA in 1993. Dave Schoffner is quoted.
A shorter version of the article was produced by the Associated Press which has been picked up by dozens of outlets. (From flash383)

(Thanks Laura Flynn) Brian Seiken’s new episode was not the only Las Vegas themed competitive eating program last weekend. There was a hot dog eating contest on NBC’s “Las Vegas” Friday in which Sam (Vanessa Marcil) competed. This was not Sam’s first eating contest; she competed against “Cookie” Jarvis in 2004. The episode will be rerun on cable on TNT on March 8.
There was also an immunity challenge eating contest on Survivor Thursday. Pig snouts were one if the items consumed.

Burrito Blog reports that the National Science Foundation requested permission to use footage of a burrito eating contest in an educational video. The purpose of that video is not mentioned. After receiving the rights to use the contest video, the NSF responded that they would use video from another source for the project. It would be interesting to learn if anyone else in competitive eating has been contacted by the NSF.

Steakbellie was recently in Jim’s Steaks in Philadelphia and he took some pictures of the Wall of Fame and emailed them. There are apparently just two members of the Wall of Fame. Lynda Kuerth ate 11 cheesesteaks in an hour and a half in 1977 and high school football player Alex Friedman bested that by one sandwich in 2001. The pictures of Alex Friedman are surrounded by receipts for his steaks. The wall has apparently yet to be updated with “Humble” Bob Shoudt’s record breaking 13 cheesesteaks in January. Pictures of the Wall of Fame are available after the jump.

JapanProbe reports that TV Tokyo (producer of Gluttonous King / Queen) admitted to broadcasting a program that made false fitness claims. Some people might claim that this places Gluttonous Queen champion Natsuko “Gal” Sone’s achievements in doubt, but that would ignore that Gal Sone has performed her feats on networks besides TV Tokyo.
R Suzuki reports that Gal Sone’s most recent television appearance was on the Nippon Television Network in which she ate a meal of 15,000 calories over 1 hour and 55 minutes. Video captures of that show are available.
The subtitle of the show was “Can Gal Sone outeat Elvis Presley” ([erubisu] [puresuri]). It is claimed that Elvis ate 15,000 or more calories a day near the end of his life. Will the unnamed burger girl of Memphis emerge to challenge “Gal” Sone and avenge the honor of Memphis residents? 😉
