The San Jose Mercury has a new article about 99 year old Bozo Miller, listed by Guinness at the “world’s greatest trencherman” when that book had an eating records section.
No one could eat or drink like Bozo, and he took on all comers. He once ate 27 two-pound chickens in a row. He drank two quarts of liquor in an hour, chug-a-lugging each quart separately. Both feats landed him in Guinness.
Such drinking could kill a man. But everyone Bozo knew at his age, even those who observed sensible diets and drank moderately, is dead.
Bozo – no one calls him Eddie or Miller – is the last of Oakland’s true characters. When he managed to push back from the table, he was a bookie, a gambler, a fight manager and a restaurateur.

The Daily Light reports that 8 year old Vincent Doblado successfully used the Heimlich maneuver to dislodge a piece of pizza caught in his friend Ian Nance’s throat. The children were competing in an unsupervised pizza eating contest.
“It’s a blessing to know that my son didn’t panic and that he knew exactly what to do,†said Alexandro Doblado, Vincent’s father. “I can remember one day Vincent coming home from school and asking me about the Heimlich maneuver. I explained to him what it was and its purpose but little did we know that he was going to have to actually do it on someone one day. It’s just a blessing that he kept his cool and that he knew what to do.â€

Happy Thanksgiving. A day devoted to massive poultry consumption is an appropriate time to bring up the Chicago quail eating challenges of 1887. In the Chicago Tribune, Miss Wesley claimed that she could eat two quails a day for 30 days. Her challenge was a response to J.C Mann winning $1,000 after he bet with George R. Clark who claimed that no man could eat a quail a day for 30 days. J. C. Mann disproved Clark’s claim. No news of Ms. Wesley’s success or failure appears in subsequent editions of the Chicago Tribune.

TimesHerald.com has an interview with Joey Chestnut and his mother Alicia to promote tomorrow’s broadcast of the Turkey Bowl (on Spike TV at 11 am and 7 pm). Joey says he intends to use the leverage he has amassed:
As for his status as the Top Dog on the planet when it comes to quick consumption of considerable quantities, Chestnut realizes that some day he’ll use his status to leverage higher fees from sponsors.
“Who said I didn’t already start that?” he said laughing, adding that a few more years and who knows, perhaps “The Joey Chestnut Story” will hit the big screen.
Mother Chestnut and son have differences of opinion when it comes to the actor playing the starring role.
“Adam Sandler,” Alicia Chestnut said.
“Matt Damon,” son grinned.
In a San Jose Mercury article, Joey says that the first book he loved was the Red Pony by John Steinbeck

(From competitiveeatingnews) Cleveland.com reports that a fire on November 8 destroyed a building owned by Chris Abatsas which housed his adult entertainment club, Monroe’s Cabaret, and a dry cleaners. No injuries were reported but a witness believed someone was trapped in the fire. Two other fires have destroyed buildings in Cleveland this month, one started several hours after Abatsas’ building burned and one the week before. Abatsas did not have insurance. The cause of the conflagration is unknown, but police will investigate it as if it was arson.
A 1999 article in the Cleveland Scene reports efforts by the police to shut down Monroe’s Cabaret due to alleged drug transactions and safety inspection violations.

Fosters.com reports that Reed Hair of Eliot Maine won $10,000 at an Oreo cookie eating contest on Friday:
Of three women and another man, Hair was the first to twist open an Oreo, lick all the frosting off, eat both halves, and down a three-ounce glass of milk. He said it took him about five minutes, but didn’t know for sure because he was so amped up on adrenaline. He finished about 30 seconds faster than the runner-up.

According to the Wall Street Journal, Nelson Peltz, responsible for Heinz’s co-sponsorship of the Nathan’s hot dog eating contest finals, is a champion of consumption himself with regards to his Palm Beach estate’s water usage:
Consider Nelson Peltz. The investor and food magnate’s oceanfront estate, called Montsorrel, is among the island’s biggest water consumers. His 13.8-acre spread, which combines two properties, used not quite 21 million gallons of water over the past 12 months — or about 57,000 gallons a day on average — at a cost of more than $50,000, according to records obtained from the local water utility. That compares with 54,000 gallons a year for an average single-family residence in Palm Beach, says Ken Rearden, assistant city administrator of West Palm Beach. (West Palm Beach supplies Palm Beach’s water.)
The estate uses 21M / (365 * 24 * 60 * 60) = .67 gallons of water per second, so it consumes 27.3 gallons of water in the 41 seconds it takes for Joey Chestnut to drink a gallon of milk.

The New York Times archives has a preview from 1906 of a spaghetti contest to be held in Little Italy which is almost certainly a parody. The eaters were to eat lengths of spaghetti ranging from 10 miles to 100 yards.
The only instance of a spaghetti contest in which the pasta was measured by length I am aware of was Donna Maiello’s 1982 record of 100 yards of spaghetti in 27.75 seconds.
