The broadcast of Nathan's Famous hot dog eating contest on ESPN2 was the most viewed program on July 4 despite being delayed for 2 hours by rain and lightning.
NPR on history of competitive eating
NPR’s “All Things Considered” did an episode about the history of competitive eating that includes coverage of last week’s Nathan’s qualifier in Washington, DC and an interview with Jason Fagone, author of “Horsemen of the Esophagus”. With Kobayashi’s retirement, all the protagonists of his 2006 book are now out of competitive eating:
- AICE / All Pro Eating, last contest 2018
- Wing Bowl, terminated in 2018
- Bill “El Wingador” Simmons, arrested for drug distribution
- Tim “Eater X” Janus, last contest 2015
- Sonya “The Black Widow” Thomas, radio silent since 2018
ESPN has a press release about the 2023 edition of Nathan's Famous hot dog eating contest. The women's contest will be streamed on ESPN3 starting at 10:45 am Eastern. The men's competition will be broadcast live on ESPN2 starting at noon. John Anderson and Rich Shea will be the commentators.
2023 ESPN Nathan’s schedule
The ESPN July 4 schedule is now out. The men’s Nathan’s finals will be televised live on ESPN2 at noon Eastern and then rerun five times. The women’s contest is not listed, but it appears it will be relegated to streaming again. At 10am, ESPN will show Wimbledon and ESPN2 will air First Take. The documentary “The Good, The Bad, The Hungry” will also be shown twice on ESPN2.
Hot Chick Studios produced a video game titled "Meat Sweats" in which the goals is to supply menu items for "Beard Meats Food" while he attempts a restaurant's eating challenge.
An episode of DangerTV in which host Andrew Younghusband competes in the 2015 Smoke's Poutinerie eating contest in Toronto with minimal training has been uploaded to youtube. Eric "Badlands" Booker, Joey Chestnut and Matt Stonie offer him advice. (The first half is about demolition derbies; the competitive eating segment begins around 11:00).
Ed "Cookie" Jarvis has posted several videos of his television appearances to his youtube channel.

On December 16, Piada Italian Street Food in Easton, OH will hold a spaghetti eating contest inspired by the movie "Elf". The pasta toppings will be maple syrup, chocolate syrup, marshmallows, M&Ms, rainbow sprinkles and a Chocolate Fudge Pop-Tart.
A press release announces that ESPN has extended its contract with MLE to show Nathan's Famous hot dog eating contest on July 4 until 2029. During that time period, the live contest will probably be web streamed only since ESPN will be broadcasting Wimbledon in early July until 2035.
Sally Field competes in a hot wing contest MCed by Guy Fieri in a preview of "80 For Brady". The movie, which will be released on February 3, also stars Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda and Rita Morena and is based on a real world story about a quartet of friends attempting to obtain tickets for Super Bowl LI to see the New England Patriots play the Atlanta Falcons.

The women's Nathan's Famous hot dog eating contest has yet to be listed on the ESPN July 4 schedule. The MLE page about the contest says it will be on ESPNews, but that channel is showing Sportscenter all morning.

ESPN News at noon has a showing of "Great American Events", which is what the Nathan's Famous hot dog eating contest has been listed as previously. ESPN and ESPN2 will be televising Wimbledon tennis at that time. ESPN will show a rerun at 4pm.

The unexpected deaths of a few eaters notwithstanding, Scarf Face is a highly amusing documentary that cleverly subverts the self-importance displayed by its subjects. But even if one shares the opinion that gorging on dangerous amounts of food somehow qualifies as a sport, the film is a fascinating look at what makes these people tick.
