Top IFOCE / MLE calendar-year winning percentages

A list of the top calendar-year winning percentage in IFOCE / MLE contests is available after the jump. Kobayashi obviously has the top winning percentage of 100% for the years 2001-2006. Joey Chestnut in 2010 has the top percentage (81.25%) for someone competing in 10 or more contests. (He would have had a percentage of 85.7% (12/14) in 2011 if he won the CP Biggest eater qualifier). Percentages of 50% or more for people competing in at least four contests have been listed. The second column is number of wins, the third is number of contests and the fourth is the fraction of contests won.

The new poll asks what do you think is the best calendar year in IFOCE history.

Most IFOCE / MLE victories in a calendar year

The MLE facebook announces that Pat Bertoletti was victorious in 18 MLE contests in 2011. (This apparently counts a victory over a team of amateurs in a pepperoni slice eating contest.) If you count every round of the US Open of Competitive eating as an individual contest, then Sonya Thomas exceeded that mark with 19 victories in 2005. A list of everyone with 10 or more victories in IFOCE/MLE contests in a calendar year according to the eatfeats database follows after the jump.

Food Service Warehouse has produced an infographic titled An Unbalanced Diet: Competitive Eating.

IFOCE head to head results table Sept 25, 2011

The table of head to head results for the past 12 months for all competitors who have two or more IFOCE results in that time period has been updated with results from contests on September 24. (All people with two or more known placements have been listed even if they have subsequently been ejected from the IFOCE.) Here is the list of top 10 winning percentages, the entire list follows after the jump.

The first number represents the number of times someone has finished ahead of someone else in the list in the past 12 months, the second number represents the number of times some has finished behind someone else in the list and the third number represents the number of ties.

1 Joey “Jaws” Chestnut (J Ch) 97% 97-3
2 Pat “Deep Dish” Bertoletti (P Be) 94.7% 161-9

Unified head to head records listing

The first attempt at a listing of combined head to head records for IFOCE and non-IFOCE eaters follows after the jump. The list compares the past two years of contest results for people with four or more contests with known placement in the past two years. The listing is probably not that accurate as a unified ranking even when people with 10 or less head to head matchups are removed, but improves if it is split into IFOCE and non-IFOCE lists.

The top 5 for IFOCE is 1) Joey Chestnut 2) Pat Bertoletti 3) Bob Shoudt 4) Sonya Thomas 5) Tim Janus. For non-IFOCE the top 5 (after omitting people with 10 or less match ups) is 1) Takeru Kobayashi 2) Tom Gilbert 3) Pete Czerwinski 4) Jon Squibb 5) Bob Kuhns.

Kobayashi’s position will decline in about a week when the 2009 Krystal Square Off falls outside the two year window.

The MLE facebook announces that "Buffalo" Jim Reeves became the first person to compete in the same contest ten years in a row at the Buffalo Wing Festival earlier this month and that Crazy Legs Conti will also reach that mark in Thursday's cannoli eating contest. This claim must apply to IFOCE contests only; Lester Tucker has won a quail egg eating contest in Texas for 16 years in a row.

IFOCE top 30 head to head comparison table

A table comparing head to head records in 2011 of the current IFOCE top 30 follows after the jump. (Ben Monson is excluded as he has no 2011 contests). Here is a list of the competitors with the best combined head-to-head records:

Losses / ties by the IFOCE top 5 to non-top 5 eaters

I think Tim Janus tying Matt Stonie in Friday’s taco eating contest in Puerto Rico was the first time someone in the IFOCE top 5 has been defeated or tied by someone outside the top 5 in 2011. Here are the times in 2010 that I could find where that happened

Coney Island weather vs. Nathan’s winning total

This is an updating of a 2007 post comparing the weather at JFK airport on July 4 around 12:50 pm with the winning total in the Nathan’s finals. The temperature on July 4 at 2 pm is predicted to be 86 °F. Weather information is from wunderground.com

With one qualifier left, it appears that at least one Nathan's finals streak will be broken. Crazy Legs Conti has competed in the last nine Nathan's finals and I believe that Eric "Badlands" Booker has appeared in all Nathan's finals he has attempted to qualify for since 1997. (Booker took a hiatus in 2007.) The only way both Conti and Booker could reach the finals is if they both exceed 37 hot dogs in Saturday's qualifier in Fishkill, NY.

Aaron Osthoff vs. Adrian Morgan

The IFOCE rookie of the year is usually someone who qualifies for the Nathan’s finals. The most likely current choices for that honor are Adrian Morgan and Aaron Osthoff. A head to head breakdown based on information in the eatfeats database follows.

The new poll asks who you think will be the 2011 IFOCE rookie of the year and the Aaron Osthoff is interviewed in the new MLE podcast.

Adrian Morgan

  • First IFOCE contest: January 9, 2010
  • Number of IFOCE contests: 19
  • Money won: $3,716.66
  • Average place: 3.68
  • Average Nathan’s qualifier performance: 23.5 HDB (5 qualifiers)

Aaron Osthoff

  • First IFOCE contest: September 18, 2010
  • Number of IFOCE contests: 11
  • Money won: $4250
  • Average place: 3.81
  • Average Nathan’s qualifier performance: 27.25 HDB (2 qualifiers)

Head to head results: 2 (Morgan) – 3 (Osthoff) Results listed after the jump

Analysis of opting out of Nathan’s women’s division for men’s

Don Sturdy mentions the possibility of Stephanie Torres opting out of the women’s division of the Nathan’s finals for the more lucrative men’s division. (It is not clear if the rules allow this.) Here are the average amounts eaten and corresponding prizes for the top 8 places in the past three years when the contest duration has been ten minutes.

$10000 60.33 1st
$5000 56.17 2nd
$2500 44.67 3rd
$1500 42.33 4th
$1000 36.58 5th
34.33 6th
33.17 7th
31.67 8th

If the women’s purse of $5000 is distributed in the same manner as the men’s purse, the following prizes will be awarded: $2500/$1250/$625/$375/$250.

The absences of Takeru Kobayashi and Sonya Thomas from this year’s men’s contest could lower the average amount eaten for some of the places, but it is probable that all male moneywinners will eat at least 33 hot dogs which is the average amount for seventh place in the previous three years.

If a rookie woman eats 31-36, that would be between the average amount of Sonya Thomas, 37 (34, 41, 36) and Juliet Lee 30 (29, 34, 27), which would be good for second place and a prize of $1250, which exceeds the men’s fifth place prize of $1000.

For the top woman to earn more money in the men’s contest she would have to come in at least second place, since the women’s first prize of $2,500 equals the men’s third place prize. The average top male performance excluding Joey Chestnut and Takeru Kobayashi over the past three years has been 47.33 (42 55 45), which exceeds Sonya Thomas’ personal best of 41 hot dogs by six.

A list of all the top 8 amounts for the past 3 years is available after the jump.
