With one qualifier left, it appears that at least one Nathan's finals streak will be broken. Crazy Legs Conti has competed in the last nine Nathan's finals and I believe that Eric "Badlands" Booker has appeared in all Nathan's finals he has attempted to qualify for since 1997. (Booker took a hiatus in 2007.) The only way both Conti and Booker could reach the finals is if they both exceed 37 hot dogs in Saturday's qualifier in Fishkill, NY.

Aaron Osthoff vs. Adrian Morgan

The IFOCE rookie of the year is usually someone who qualifies for the Nathan’s finals. The most likely current choices for that honor are Adrian Morgan and Aaron Osthoff. A head to head breakdown based on information in the eatfeats database follows.

The new poll asks who you think will be the 2011 IFOCE rookie of the year and the Aaron Osthoff is interviewed in the new MLE podcast.

Adrian Morgan

  • First IFOCE contest: January 9, 2010
  • Number of IFOCE contests: 19
  • Money won: $3,716.66
  • Average place: 3.68
  • Average Nathan’s qualifier performance: 23.5 HDB (5 qualifiers)

Aaron Osthoff

  • First IFOCE contest: September 18, 2010
  • Number of IFOCE contests: 11
  • Money won: $4250
  • Average place: 3.81
  • Average Nathan’s qualifier performance: 27.25 HDB (2 qualifiers)

Head to head results: 2 (Morgan) – 3 (Osthoff) Results listed after the jump

Analysis of opting out of Nathan’s women’s division for men’s

Don Sturdy mentions the possibility of Stephanie Torres opting out of the women’s division of the Nathan’s finals for the more lucrative men’s division. (It is not clear if the rules allow this.) Here are the average amounts eaten and corresponding prizes for the top 8 places in the past three years when the contest duration has been ten minutes.

$10000 60.33 1st
$5000 56.17 2nd
$2500 44.67 3rd
$1500 42.33 4th
$1000 36.58 5th
34.33 6th
33.17 7th
31.67 8th

If the women’s purse of $5000 is distributed in the same manner as the men’s purse, the following prizes will be awarded: $2500/$1250/$625/$375/$250.

The absences of Takeru Kobayashi and Sonya Thomas from this year’s men’s contest could lower the average amount eaten for some of the places, but it is probable that all male moneywinners will eat at least 33 hot dogs which is the average amount for seventh place in the previous three years.

If a rookie woman eats 31-36, that would be between the average amount of Sonya Thomas, 37 (34, 41, 36) and Juliet Lee 30 (29, 34, 27), which would be good for second place and a prize of $1250, which exceeds the men’s fifth place prize of $1000.

For the top woman to earn more money in the men’s contest she would have to come in at least second place, since the women’s first prize of $2,500 equals the men’s third place prize. The average top male performance excluding Joey Chestnut and Takeru Kobayashi over the past three years has been 47.33 (42 55 45), which exceeds Sonya Thomas’ personal best of 41 hot dogs by six.

A list of all the top 8 amounts for the past 3 years is available after the jump.

Apparently pro wrestler Ric Flair’s adage, “to be the man, you gotta beat the man”, does not apply to IFOCE rankings. “Notorious” Bob Shoudt was moved ahead of Takeru Kobayashi in the latest top 50 despite never having defeated him in nine previous contests, which are listed after the jump.
