Gal mania sweeps Japan

The surge in popularity for the winner of the Gluttonous Queen contest, nicknamed “The Gal”, can be tracked by searching for her name (ギャル曽根) in Japanese blogs using technorati. There were almost 200 mentions of “The Gal” in Japanese blogs the day after her victory was televised. She currently has 439 mentions in Japanese blogs which is quite impressive when you take into account that her competitive eating career only started last fall. In comparision, Kate Stelnick has 244 mentions in blogs, most coming in January 2005 (and there are more blogs in the US than in Japan).

Competitive eating podcasts

Several podcasts of the Paunch Stevenson show have some competitive eating content in general and Sonya Thomas in particular.

New blog: mega munch

Dave Shoffner has started a new blog at http://megamunch.blogspot.com/ Like SuperSizedMeals.com, the main focus of the blog is the preparation and attempted consumption of abnormally large meals, but there is also some competitive eating content. The blog’s initial entry describes Ashley’s consumption of a one pound burger from Fuddruckers

GoldenPalace website copies start of Boston Herald article

If you would like to see the start of the original version of the Boston Herald article that inaccurately reported that Sonya Thomas competed in the March 16 corned beef and cabbage contest, it can be found on the GoldenPalace website. No attribution is provided for that page and its second paragraph matches the second paragraph of the current version of the Herald’s article. Two videos of the contest are also available.

BB Episode 7: My dinner with Krazy Kevin

The seventh episode of Brian Seiken’s video podcast is now online, and it is the funniest show yet. Brian declares a truce in the Great Pickle Jihad (by jihad I mean the quest for the most spiritually enlightened way to eat pickles quickly and not violence or terrorism against pickles) and goes to chez Lipsitz for what he believes is a friendly dinner, only to have Kevin spring an escarole contest on him. The scenes of Kevin preparing the escarole with dubious sanitary standards should help discourage any dieter from eating. Brian also has a phone interview with Kevin’s nephew.

Beautiful Brian news & links

Krazy Kevin Lipsitz will be Brian Seiken’s guest for the seventh episode of his television show. The episode is currently in post-production.

Brian has also made a commitment to improve his physique and health. Lets all support him in his efforts to lose weight. He intends to continue in competitive eating.

Seiken has also submitted two links:

  • A show on radio station WFMU from early 2002 about competitive eating with interviews by Richard Shea, Cookie Jarvis and Andrew Goldstein can be obtained at http://www.wfmu.org/listen.php?show=2698
(Real player required) The competitive eating segment begins at 1:04. The show occurred between the Glutton Bowl and the airing of the Gutbuster documentary (it was hoped at the time that the Glutton Bowl would be an annual event.)
  • A blog entry by a Harvard Law student briefly mentions the MTV True Life competitive eating documentary. The author finds the milieu of competitive eating fascinating and hopes to write some personality sketchs of eaters on his blog.

BB TV #6: Charles Hardy in-studio

The sixth episode of Brian Seiken’s television show is now available. Commissioner Charles Hardy is Brian’s first in studio guest. Hardy describes how he became involved in competitive eating and his role in the 9/11 recovery efforts. Hardy also offers his opinion on if he would have disqualified Kobayashi in the 2001 Nathan’s contest. The most dramatic section of the show occurs when Dale Boone calls into the show from India and Hardy confronts Boone about his inflammatory statements and actions.

BB TV #5: Don Moses Lerman

If you are having a competitive eating television withdrawal after two shows on consecutive nights, go see the fifth episode of “Beautiful” Brian Seiken’s video podcast. Brian starts by reiterating the details about the “No Mas” affair and offers his anonymous critic a phone interview on his next television show. Brian does his first in-person interview with a competitive eater at Don “Moses” Lerman’s home. Don shows off his vast collection of eating trophies and paraphenalia, including what is most likely the world’s largest collection of competitive eating themed embroidered jackets. In addition to attempting 18 jalapeno peppers in under a minute, Don also does his standup routine and sings Sinatra. Don says “for the record” that he is going to come back better than ever and take the 2007 Laredo jalapeno contest.

Supersizedmeals.com

Supersizedmeals.com is a blog solely devoted to eating challenges. It debuted in November, but I just recently discovered it.

In other supersized meals news, information and pictures about the creation and consumption of In N Out Burger’s 100×100 can be found in this blog entry. 8 eaters were needed to consume it.

Beautiful Brian TV episode #3 available

The third episode of “Beautiful” Brian Seiken’s television show is now available for viewing. Patrick Bertoletti is the guest and there is also footage from Adelman’s Deli Kings Highway in Brooklyn. (Seiken said his third episode would be available Super Bowl Saturday, he must not have taken into account the two week gap between the Super Bowl and the conference championship games.)

Beautiful Brian TV episode #2

“Beautiful” Brian Seiken has uploaded the second episode of his television show. At approximately 50 minutes, it is about twice as long as the previous episode. He begins the episode with an overview of competitive eating websites (thanks for the compliments BB.) The bulk of the episode consists of an interview with Ray “The Bison” Meduna who will judge the Barrick burger contest in Las Vegas this weekend. Ray discusses his competitive eating history and describes why he has retired (temporarily he hopes) from eating contests. The show ends with a tribute to Martin Luther King Jr, a recollection about Brian’s dream involving Sonya Thomas and Dale Boone and an attempt to break Joey Chestnut’s record of drinking a gallon of milk in 41 seconds. Pat Bertoletti is the expected guest for the third episode.

BB TV pilot episode

Brian Seiken has the initial episode of his online TV show available. An phone interview with Cookie Jarvis comprises the bulk of the show. Cookie talks about his experience in competitive eating and says he will have a limited presence on the IFOCE circuit in the first half of 2006 due to work. The next episode will hopefully have Ray “The Bison” Meduna talk about judging the upcoming Barrick burger contest.

Beautiful Brian TV coming in 2006

Beautiful Brian Seiken has announced that he will host a competitive television show in 2006 available for viewing on his website which will have interviews with competitive eaters, eating stunts and commentary. He also has a New Year’s video message for his fans.

sonyatheblackwidow.com restored

After a hiatus of more than a week, Sonya Thomas’ web site has been restored with a new picture of her and Washington Redskin Renaldo Wynn (along with a very nice compliment for this site – Thanks Sonya.) Sonya apparently had an eating contest with the defensive lineman televised on local cable televesion. Sonya vs. the entire Redskins offensive or defensive line would probably be a more evenly matched competition.

Beautiful Brian’s Blog/Bulletin Board down

Competitive eating websites appear to be an endangered species, first Kobayashi’s site disappears, then Sonya’s is redirected to a generic page and now Brian Seiken’s blog produces a 404 error.

In other Brian Seiken website news, he now has several video clips available on his main website.

Update 6:32 pm, the blog is back up, but only the first post is online.
