K97 in Edmonton is holding a pancake eating contest this morning inspired by an injury experienced while Dustin Penner of the Los Angeles Kings ate pancakes. The contest awards tickets to an Edmonton Oilers vs. Los Angeles Kings game and entrants had to submit a story of an eating-related injury to gain a spot.
The average member of the University of Virginia football team reportedly ate 9.03 pounds of beef at a Brazillian steakhouse before the Chick Fil A bowl. The top eater on the Wisconsin football team at the pre-Rose Bowl "Beef Bowl" ate about 6.5 pounds (8 * 13 oz.) of prime rib, which is considerably less than the UVa average.
The Chick Fil A Bowl held an eating contest at Sal Grosso's Brazilian Steakhouse where members of the University of Virginia football team defeated players on Auburn University's team by an average of 9.03 pounds per player (1002 total) to 5.9 pounds per player (614 total) which is ironic considering that Chick Fil A's commercials featuring cows discourage viewers from eating beef. College Football Talk reports that University of Oregon offensive lineman Mark Asper applied the Heimlich maneuver on a man choking during the pre-Rose Bowl "Beef Bowl" eating contest held at Lawry's in Beverly Hills. The choking man was the father of an Oregon student and apparently not participating in the "Beef Bowl".
Bobby Valentine was announced as the new manager of the Boston Red Sox today. The former New York Mets manager ate 120 pancakes to win an eating contest when he was in college. As a manager in Japan, he was visited by female competitive eater Natsuko "Gal" Sone at the Chiba Lotte Marines training camp in February 2008. and did a photo shoot with a lot of pancakes.

Regis Philbin refereed 1963 eating contest featuring Ernie Ladd

The MLE facebook announces that Pat Bertoletti, Tim Janus and Crazy Legs Conti will attempt to break the record for banana eating on tomorrow’s episode of Live with Regis & Kelly.

Regis Philbin had previous involvement with competitive eating before the debut of Live with Regis & Kelly. In 1963, he served as a referee for an eating contest between San Diego Charger defensive lineman / pro wrestler Ernie “Big Cat” Ladd and Nick Cordileone. Pat Bertoletti will stay in New York City and compete in Thursday’s cannoli contest in an attempt to obtain his 36th record. Eric “Badlands” Booker and Maria “Edible” have also been announced as entrants.
