The Daily Breeze reports that 13 year old Noah Akers died choking on a hot dog topped with whipped cream at a fundraiser for Haiti at the Boys and Girls Club of San Pedro, California. The event was not an eating competition; all finishers of one hot dog would receive candy regardless of their time.

ESPNLosAngeles has a column about the “Beef Bowl” held at Lawry’s Prime Rib for members of the Rose Bowl teams.
The truth is no one really knows which team eats more in the Beef Bowl anymore. The pre-Rose Bowl gorgefest has been around for 54 years, longer than all but five actual bowl games, but organizers haven’t kept official tabs on the exact amount devoured by each team since the 1970s when they stopped advertising it as an eating contest. Richard R. Frank, president and chief executive officer of Lawry’s Restaurants Inc., now admits that when someone asks for an exact number eaten by both teams, “someone will pull a number out of the air.”
VH1.com has a clip from the reality show For the Love of Ray J 2 of a chili dog eating eating contest held at Pink's Hot Dogs in Los Angeles. (I wonder if the restaurant would have granted filming permission if they knew several of the competitors would vomit.)
The Los Angeles International Tamale festival scheduled for December 13 has been cancelled due to the economy. A tamale eating contest was planned at that event.

LA-OC Foodie has a blog entry about "Choisauce" winning a contest by being the first to complete her five pound Manuel's Special Burrito at El Tepeyac Café in East Los Angeles. Choisauce previously won a never ending pasta contest at an Olive Garden.
Bamboodle's in San Gabriel, Ca will hold a wonton noodle eating contest on October 24 awarding a prize package worth over $2,500 to the winner.

World hot dog-eating champion Joey Chestnut and arch-rival Takeru Kobayashi will face off on Saturday, May 30, 2009, in one of the greatest battle of their careers: The Pizza Hut P’Zone Chow-lenge. The five-minute event featuring the monster 12″-inch, one-pound P’Zones will take place at Sony Studios in Los Angeles, and portions of the contest will be aired on SpikeTV’s Guys Choice Awards in June.
Kobayashi was to participate in a P’Zone exhibition in 2007 but declined due to “jawthritis”. Joey Chestnut took his place (video)

A posting on craigslist has the following request:
If you have ever competed in a professional eating contest… we might want to book you on our new show.
The only other information is that no compensation will be provided. The name or other details about the show are not listed.
