The Washingtonian has an interview with Dr. Robynne Chutkan, an gastroenterologist at Medstar Georgetown University Hospital about the negative health consequences of competitive eating. (The article says the women's Nathan's finals lasted 45 minutes when the actual duration was 10 minutes. )

Northern Virginia Magazine has the most in-depth article about Sonya Thomas seen in quite some time (via Washington Post State of NoVa blog) Some observations from the article:

  • Sonya declines discussion about a possible marriage to a Mr. Thomas.
  • She says that she has to pay her own travel expenses including a trip to New York City for the Nathan’s finals in 2011 which consumed most of her $10,000 prize. (Travel expenses for finalists are supposedly paid by Nathan’s)
  • The Jacksonville, AR Wing Ding is listed as a possible future contest site, but the entire festival was cancelled.

ZBurgerContest.com announces that Z Burger in Washington, DC will hold a burger eating contest on July 3 awarding $2250 in cash ($1000 to the winner) and $2250 in Z-Burger Food Cards.

“Strasburger” debuts at Nationals home opener

The “Strasburger” made its debut at yesterday’s Washington Nationals home opener (it will not be available at all home games). The 8 pound burger named in honor of pitcher Stephen Strasburg weighs 8 pounds, costs $59 and has 8,000 to 10,000 calories. The second Strasburger ever purchased was reportedly finished by a two person team. (There are no listed prizes or official recognition for a sole finisher.)

The finals of the 2012 Washington, DC area Wing Bowl will take place on March 1 and award $2,500. Qualifiers will be held at Hard Times Cafes throughout February starting in Springfield, VA on Thursday.

The contest is expected to start at 12:35 eastern. Joey Chestnut, Sonya Thomas, Bob Shoudt, Juliet Lee, Micah Collins, Crazy Legs Conti, Brian Subich, Maria “Edible”, Brian Dudzinski, Bill Myers, Brian Seiken, Andrew Kossuth, Tim Connelley (amateur) and Andrew Petrick (amateur) are expected to compete.

I think this will be the first IFOCE non-qualifier contest on the east coast between Palm Beach and Atlantic City since the funnel cake eating contest at Kings Dominion in Virginia in May 2009.

In a Washingtonian interview, Sonya Thomas said that she thinks it will take 15 pounds or more to win Sunday's chili eating contest at A Taste of DC. She also said that she has no plans to retire. update WMAL has a radio interview of Sonya Thomas about the chili contest.
