A Chicagoist blog entry about public relations executive Dan Edelman mentions a hot dog eating contest covered by Life Magazine. The focus of the 1957 article (available in the Google Books archive) was reversals by children. One letter to Life about the contest demanded that the mayor of the town where the contest be impeached and the American Medical Association censure the town's doctors for allowing the contest to happen.
ConciergePreferred has a list of Chicago eating challenges. Bartolini's will award $250 if a diner can beat the record of 48 minutes for its 10 pound meatball sandwich.

The truck is offering a sandwich eating challenge awarding $500 to a customer that can beat Pat or Tim’s time. A facebook with a picture of the back of the truck and twitter have also been started. The facebook for Bartolini's announces that Bob "Killer" Kuhns finished the 10 pound meatball sub challenge in 48:04, less than half of the previous record of an hour and forty minutes.
The list of professionals expected to compete in Sunday's meatball eating contest in Midlothian, IL sponsored by Bartolini's has been posted and includes Joe Menchetti, Tom Gilbert, Bob Kuhns and Pete Czerwinski, who will be filmed by German television for an upcoming program.
