Erik Denmark sets Guinness pepper records

Erik “the Red” Denmark reports on his attempts to set two Guinness pepper eating records at the Groz-with-Gas-a-Thon on Friday:

I was on the docket of guests that included a superstar lineup of Seattle sports stars past and present. I think I was able to entertain everyone who was in attendance by putting myself through some serious pain and establishing some pepper eating records that I am very proud of:

Guinness World Record Jalapeno Eating Results (1 minute):

26 Jalapenos (beats previous record of 16)

Habanero Pepper Eating Results (1 minute eating with no substances during and for 5 minutes following):

32 Habaneros (establishes new record)

A gallery and videos of the attempts are available.

Click Here to watch the most recent episode where I play a proponent of ‘supply-side economics’ in a competitive eating/political issue debate with Charlie Stockman, a proponent of ‘green economics’ with anchor, Charles Armstrong as moderator. The show turned out really well and it is damn funny.

Erik Denmark article in Seattle Times

The Seattle Times has a long article about Erik “the Red” Denmark with coverage of his victory at the Shea Stadium qualifier. Denmark had about $10,000 in travel expenses last year.

Rich Shea says he is unaware of any diabetic eaters, which would come as news to Pat Philbin.

Washington state lutefisk eating contest

NorthKitsapHerald.com has an article about a lutefisk eating contest in Poulsbo, Washington.

Local lutefisk eating legend Eric Perkins almost regretted encouraging Jake Watrous to enter Sunday’s Viking Fest lutefisk eating contest at the Kvelstad Pavilion.

Before bowing out at the three-and-a-half-pound mark, Watrous put a scare into both Perkins and reigning champion, Puyallup’s Charles Jensen. Even so, Jensen retained his title by consuming more than four pounds. Perkins literally lost his ‘fisk as he finished second for the second straight year.

Erik “the Red” to attempt spot shrimp record

Erik “the Red” Denmark announces that he will attempt to break the IFOCE record of 4 lb. 9 oz. of spot shrimp in 12 minutes tomorrow. The record is currently held by “Hungry” Charles Hardy. The attempt will be part of a charity event and broadcast on internet radio around 7:30 eastern / 4:30 pacific.

Crazy Legs Conti claims to have done 5 pounds in 10 minutes:

Q Do you have a favorite eating contest? Hot dogs? Ice cream?

A I turned pro on Acme Louisiana Oysters (20 dozen in ten minutes) and earned the moniker, “The Mollusk King”. I’ve done well in Alaskan Spot Shrimp (5 lbs in ten minutes). I am training for Delaware Crab Cakes, so seafood is my specialty. My father weaned me on seafood, calling it, “low tide food – nothing that grows above the ankle”. Favorite Eating Contest? Lobster, Lobstah, and Ayuh, Lobsta.

No Sport Illustrated (on Campus) jinx for Joey Chestnut as he continues the momentum he established in August and Labor Day weekend, easily beating “Badlands” Booker, who is unable to upset a top 3 eater in chicken wings for the second time in a month. All three (and the next two places) qualify for the finals in Boston next month.

Seattle Verizon VoiceWing Battle Preview

The Seattle Times has a preview of Saturday’s Verizon VoiceWing chicken wing qualifier focusing on expected entrants Joey Chestnut and Eric “Badlands” Booker. The training methods of both competitiors are described. The article incorrectly states that Booker holds the Buffalo Wing Festival contest record (which was set by Sonya Thomas in 2004). It is surprising that Joey Chestnut would make the trip north when he has a qualifying contest in his hometown in two weeks. “Humble” Bob Shoudt states on his website that he and Patrick Bertoletti are also planning to compete. The top five competitors in the three qualifiers (also in SF and DC) will make the finals in Boston.
