Sonya Thomas in Korea Times

The Korea Times has an article (in English) about Sonya Thomas:

When asked if she gets to eat much Korean food, Thomas said she often goes to Korean restaurants, including an all-you-can-eat buffet restaurant, in the growing Korean-American community in Virginia. “I usually go for ‘bulgogi,’ spicy-tofu stew and spicy-seafood stew. I also love chewing on Korean dried squid, which I think helps my chewing strength.”

She said she had actually lost some weight since becoming a competitive eater and that her cholesterol levels are normal. She plans to continue competing as long as she can stay healthy.

Aside from being a volume eater, another major advantage she says she has over other competitors is her blazing speed and eating technique. “I am really good when it comes to food where you have to move fast and use hands, like eating chicken wings or oysters or lobsters,” she mused.

STBW.com starts commentary page

A page called “Sonya’s View: A Peek Inside the Web” has been started on SonyaTheBlackWidow.com. The initial column concerns Sonya’s relationship with the IFOCE/MLE:

Oftentimes when I visit various competitive eating- (CE-) related Web sites, regarding some of the differences between Major League Eating (MLE) / International Federation of Competitive Eating (IFOCE) and independently affiliated CE organizations, I ask myself where I feel I belong. That question was easily answered in the past, as no organization could have treated me any better than the most highly esteemed IFOCE — and the people in that organization — as they continue to be the best of the best!

Does that mean that there have not been challenges? No, not at all, as is the case with anything in life. But since life is about variety and broadening one’s experiences, I look forward to the possibility of new relationships and new challenges.

Sonya marks a decade in competitive eating

New on SonyaTheBlackWidow.com

Sonya, before you became a competitive eater, did you ever do an eating challenge?

– Response: I guess I sort of did. Way back in the summer of 1997, when I first came to the US from my home country of South Korea, my brand new American friends and I went to the Trail Dust Streak House in Dallas, Texas. Being only a little bigger than I am now (then about 108 lbs), my friends could not believe it when I took them up on their dare and ate the Trail Dust’s (then) featured 52-oz T-Bone Steak with a Baked Potato and a large Milk Shake. I was not close to being full when I finished, and I honestly didn’t understand the reason for my friends’ state of shock. I just thought that they had poor appetites.

A 50 ounce steak (called the “Bull Shipper”) is still on the Trail Dust’s menu, but there does not appear to be any online “Wall of Fame” on the restaurant website.

Press release about Sonya Thomas paper plate ad

(From sonyatheblackwidow.com) The website for the supermarket chain Harris Teeter has a press release about Sonya Thomas’ commerical for house brand paper plates. The other three commercials in the advertising campaign star former wrestler Hulk Hogan, speed drummer Mike Mangini and radio Host Art Bell. Harris Teeter is based on the east coast with most locations between Maryland and Georgia. Some of the ads have the products used in unconventional manners:

Bell promotes aluminum foil for Harris Teeter by shaping it into a hat with an antenna. Why, you may ask? It’s Art Bell, he needed to see if the yourhome aluminum foil protected his brain from paranormal frequencies.

WP Express: Sonya Thomas in bun contest (?) only

The Washington Post’s Express has an article about Sonya Thomas that is not 100% accurate:

Might that mean that Alexandria’s very own “Black Widow,” the highly ranked competitive eater Sonya Thomas, might be moving up the rankings? She’s scheduled to compete in Nathan’s hot dog bun eating contest, but, so far, not the hot dog competition itself.

Sonya Thomas profile in LancasterOnline.com

LancasterOnline.com did an article about Sonya Thomas to preview the Shoo Fly Pie contest.

Though Thomas prefers salads and sushi, most days she has to eat on the job. She often avoids her favorite Korean restaurants, where too many fans recognize her.

“When I go eat, I don’t like the people bothering me,” she says. “When I eat, I want to enjoy my food.”

Thomas starts her day with coffee. After the lunch rush, she grabs a crispy chicken sandwich — hold the mayo — chicken tenders and king-sized french fries, washing it down with three or four king-sized Diet Cokes.

“Every day (it’s) the same food,” she says of the approximately 1,900-calorie midday meal. “It never changes.”
