Promotional poster in Nathan’s restaurants

On a recent trip to a Nathan’s restaurant, Don “Moses” Lerman saw a poster promoting the July 4 hot dog contest. Some of the pictures on the bottom are not what you would expect. Andersson is the Swedish competitor Robert Andersson. (Hopefully he will bring his girlfriend again 😉 )

The URL on the poster TheNathansRematch.com redirects to a “Coming Soon” page.

The poster says the contest will be on ESPN, so it will not be part of the Spike TV series.

MosesNews.com also has some great pictures of all the competitors in some of the Nathan’s contests earlier this decade.

Article by asparagus contest entrant

ContraCostaTimes.com has an article by Eric Louie about his participation in the asparagus eating contest last week. There are several quotes from winner Joey Chestnut:

“A lot of it’s building up tolerance,” says Chestnut, a down-to-earth 6-foot-1-inch 230-pound civil engineering college student from San Jose. Talking with me after the contest, Chestnut, 23, shows none of the arrogance that typifies competitors at the top of their game. He even apologizes for drinking my water during the competition.

To him, being a successful competitive eater is “really mental.” And he’s right, I learned. The food will fit, but the key is being able to resist gagging, which is kind of the body’s shut-off valve. The truth is, even as I was stuffing my face with more asparagus than many people eat in a season, my stomach was only at a third of my capacity. While the thought of eating and burps that taste of oily batter ruined my appetite until the next day, I did not throw up, or have to let loose in any way at a festival porta potty.

A professional tamale-eating contest will debut at the Cinco de Mayo festival this year and will be covered by ESPN. Berryhill Baja Grill coordinated the contest with the International Federation of Competitive Eating. Seven of the top 10 competitive eaters will compete to see who can eat the most tamales in 12 minutes, Lopez said. Last year the winner ate 57 tamales in 12 minutes, he said.

Offal eating contest to promote Sony PlayStation game

(From GizmoCafe) After a woman died following a water drinking contest in which the prize was a Nitendo Wii, another ill considered eating contest held in conjunction with a video game has taken place. The Daily Mail reports on a contest to promote the launch of “Gods of War II” for the Sony PlayStation 2:

Electronics giant Sony has sparked a major row over animal cruelty and the ethics of the computer industry by using a freshly slaughtered goat to promote a violent video game.

The corpse of the decapitated animal was the centrepiece of a party to celebrate the launch of the God Of War II game for the company’s PlayStation 2 console.

At the event, guests competed to see who could eat the most offal – procured elsewhere and intended to resemble the goat’s intestines – from its stomach.
