Palm Beach Happening has an interview with Max Suzuki, who says he was inspired to enter competitive eating by Moeno Azuki. He hopes that Japanese competitive eating can avoid the messiness that some American competitive eaters exhibit.
The MLE twitter announces that Max Suzuki will do Saturday's Nathan's qualifier at the NYNY Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. I think he will be the first Japanese competitive eater to attempt to qualify for the Nathan's finals since the 2006 qualifier in Tokyo. No other Vegas entrants were listed.
Earlier today, Takeru Kobayashi faced off against a lion in an eating contest on a New Year's Day special for Japanese TV called Battle of Beauty and Beast. In 2003, Kobayashi competed against a bear in a hot dog eating contest on Fox's Man vs. Beast program. update Shrugu702 has a video clip of the program.
Michael Phelps racing a shark is not the only recent human vs. aquatic life matchup. Angela Sato faced off against a seal in an eating contest at North Safari in Hokkaido earlier this month.
Sayler's in Portland has uploaded a clip from a recent Japanese television program where female competitive eater Sachiyo Masubuchi faced off against Danny in a 72 ounce steak eating contest.
Tokyo Drew has a video of Darron Breeden setting the record for a 6kg (13.2 lb) okonomiyaki challenge in a record 24 minutes. The previous record holder was Max Suzuki with a time of 30 minutes.

According to an instagram caption by "Beard Meats Food", the annual Battle of Big Eaters produced by TV Tokyo will not return on New Years Day 2018.

Battle of the Big Eaters 4 recorded in Union Square Park in Manhattan today. Here are what the teams appear to be:

Don Chingon in Brooklyn has a request for people to attempt their burrito challenge today for Japanese television. This will probably be a segment for Battle of the Big Eaters 4 to be broadcast on Jan 1, 2017.
The Guardian has a report on the noodle eating contest that will be held in Morioka, Japan on November 6. Competitive noodle eating has reportedly been practiced in that city since the 17th century.

Manila.coconuts.com reports that some Chinese consider Yuka Kinoshita's recent video where she ate bananas as an insult to their country. One viewer theorized that the 137 bananas Yuka ate was intended to be a reference to the Chinese population of 1.37 billion.
Vancouver.craigslist.ca has a request for Canadian competitive eaters to compete in the qualifier for Battle of the Big Eaters 4 in Vancouver in September. The selected competitors will face teams from Japan, the USA and another country later in the fall in Dallas. Entrants appearing in the qualifier will receive $200 and those that compete in Dallas will get an additional $500.
