SJ-R article about the restaurant
Adam Richman to attempt Krispy Kreme burger tomorrow
BND reports that Adam Richman of Man vs. Food will attempt “Baseball’s Best Burger” at tomorrow’s Gateway Grizzlies game in Sauget, IL (East St. Louis area). The sandwich uses a split Krispy Kreme doughnut as a bun. This will be the third time Man vs. Food has recorded at a minor league stadium (Charleston, SC, W. Michigan) and St. Louis will become the third metropolitan area to be visited twice (SF Bay area, Raleigh-Durham)
SJ-R has a report (no spoiler) about Adam Richman’s attempt at a bowl of Firebrand Chili in Springfield, IL yesterday.
update The article reports that Jim Hamrick, who has been ranked in the IFOCE top 50, set the Firebrand Chili record of 5 bowls last week.
Pat Bertoletti eating challenge results
Pat Bertoletti commented that he ate the 5 pound Burritozilla at Iguana’s Taqueria in San Jose in 1 minute and 41 seconds, breaking Joey Chestnut’s record. (Joey Chestnut may have since regained the record). Pat’s Burritozilla mark is included on the list of eating challenge results on deepdisheats.com which includes feats such as the 40 inch pizza (with a partner) at the Pizza Machine and the Tex-ass doughnut from Voodoo doughnuts in Portland, OR in 23 seconds which have not received much media attention.
60 inch pizza at The Pizza Machine
(from Man vs. Food message board) The Pizza Machine in Springfield, Illinois, whose previous claim to fame was a 40 inch pizza that was delivered by crane, now has a 60 inch pizza. At 2827 square inches, the area of the pizza exceeds the area of the 52 inch square pizza from Big Mama’s & Papa’s Pizza in Los Angeles by 123 square inches. The 60 inch pizza must apparently be purchased in combination with a party package at a cost of $350. No eating challenge for the 60 inch pizza is listed. The pizza appeared on Country Fried Home Videos on CMT.
Big Fat Ugly Sandwich Challenge
(from email) R & I Magazine has an article about giant sandwich challenges. A new challenge on the list is the Big Ugly Sandwich Challenge at the Fat Sandwich Company. According to the article, The Big Ugly contains:
four cheeseburgers, a double cheesesteak, chicken cheesesteak, gyro meat, grilled chicken, bacon, sausage, pork roll, mozzarella sticks, chicken finger, chicken nuggets, macaroni-and-cheese bites, fried mushrooms, jalapeno poppers, pizza bites, onion rings, hash browns, American cheese, ketchup and mayonnaise

Peoria contest ($1000 prize) takes aim at Nathan’s
The PJ Star reports that Todd Rawls of Vertucci’s Chicago Style Eats has high ambitions for the Independence Day hot dog eating contest he is organizing in East Peoria, IL:
“Chicago is, in my opinion, the hot dog capital of the world,” Rawls said. “Everybody knows their Chicago dog. So I’m shocked Chicago hasn’t done this. Well, they’ve had their opportunity. East Peoria’s going to do it, and we’re going to get known. I’d love to be able to see this overtake Nathan’s, and I think it can get done quickly if purse money – the money that can be won by eating – exceeds Nathan’s.”
The contest will start off with $1,000 prize money for the winner, but the eatery is looking for sponsors to increase the pot for next year.
The contest has a page on the city of East Peoria’s web page. Prospective entrants will need to qualify at Vertucci’s Chicago Style Eats by eating as many hot dogs as possible in 9 minutes. The best performances will receive entry into the contest and the qualification fee is $9.99
40 inch pizza delivered by crane
The Pizza Machine in Springfield, Illinois offers a 40 inch pizza. The pizza is delivered to a diner’s table by a crane. $500 will be awarded to a team of two that can finish the pizza in under an hour.
Just Two Guys has a blog entry about attempting the 40 inch challenge and Brad J Ward has a gallery of the restaurant.

Illinois State Fair apparently drops 2006 goldenpalace grilled cheese qualifier
In this article about the events planned for the 2006 Illinois State Fair, it is stated that a horseshoe (something containing french fries and cheese sauce) eating contest will be held, apparently replacing last year’s goldenpalace grilled cheese qualifier. The article does not explicitly state that the grilled cheese contest is not scheduled, so it is possible that the fair could host two eating contests. If the contest does not take place at the Illinois State Fair, the 2006 goldenpalace grilled cheese circuit could either be held at other venues or be dropped completely.
“Humble” Bob Shoudt opens website
“Humble” Bob Shoudt, winner of the Illinois State Fair Grilled Cheese qualifier, has just started a website at humblebob.com His website is especially welcome when it is considered that humility is not an overabundant commodity on all competitive eating websites. (The female competitor in the grilled cheese contest picture, Amy Bergseth, looks a little like Angelina Jolie. I wonder how she finished?)
