March 24 independent contest reports

The New Haven independent has an article about the vegan cupcake eating contest in New Haven, CT to promote the release of the cookbook by Little Vegan Monsters. The writer did not stay long enough to did not stay long enough to report who won the finals. Picnic style rules were not required:

And the ground rules were serious. You could eat your cupcake straight, you could dip it in water or soy milk, you could sip water before or after each cupcake. Or you could pour soy milk or water over your cupcake before consumption, which everyone agreed was completely disgusting.

He’s making a lot of money in prize winnings, appearance fees and frequent-flier miles. But he’s not getting rich, he says. He’s in it for the glory and good times.

“I live in San Jose, and it’s expensive. I’m paying for school. Plus, I like to party a lot. So the money goes pretty fast.”

There is additional information about her trip, including a DVD documetary for sale, at http://www.galfromdownunder.com/route66 The video clip can be downloaded directly from that website and there is a gallery (Page 1, Page 2, Page 3) of her meal.
