Big eating car model

Import Tuner has an interview with car model Tanya Ann Schafer, whose trim waist belies a big appetite:

TS: Hang out? What’s that?! I don’t do too much of that anymore because I’m always working, but when I do go out it usually involves dancing. Anywhere, anytime, as long as some kind of music is playing. Oh, and I love to go out to restaurants because I love to eat. People are usually in shock when they see me eat.
2nr: Really… you have to describe.
TS: It’s not all over my face or anything! I can just eat a lot, and people are surprised because I’m pretty thin.
2nr: It must be your hollow leg. So what is your favorite food to stuff yourself with?
TS: Everything! But if I have to name one type, it would have to be Italian.

Austin veggie dog competitor report

Indiana James competed in the 2 person team vegetarian hot dog eating contest held in Austin, TX Saturday and wrote a blog entry about her experience. She ate 10.5 hot dogs in 12 minutes, a half hot dog more than her male teammate “Honeybun”. Their total of 20.5 hot dogs was good for second place. Fans of picnic style rules will be glad to know that apparently no teams took advantage of the blender.

“In second place, with 20 and a half, we have Honeybun and Indiana!” We smiled, happy that our prides were still in tact. The girl to my left was like, “OMG! I could only eat three!”

What’s cool is that for the rest of the day, I felt like a local celebrity. Everyone kept high fiving me, and asking me how many dogs I choked down. Even after we left, I was recognized. We made a stop over at End of an Ear to pick up the Voxtrot CD for Honeybun, and the clerk was all like “You were that girl from the hot dog contest!”

Shishaldin – 2005 TripRewards entrant

This afternoon, TripRewards will sponsor a chicken wing eating contest. The previous TripRewards contest was a birthday cake eating contest in 2005. AnchoragePress.com has an article about Shishaldin, who participated in that event.

Readers might remember Shishaldin as the Brooklyn, New York-based performance artist so starved for attention that she ran the New York Marathon draped in cold cuts, auctioned her DNA on eBay and willed her remains to the Guggenheim Museum to be freeze-dried and displayed after her death. She also once attempted a diet solely of her own breast milk by using imported lactation-inducing drugs and a breast pump. (She described the results on her website: “Weeks of nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea ensued… project abandoned. Some people are just not the nurturing kind.”)

Now Shishaldin is training to become a competitive eater. Last month she beat out ex-NFL celebrity William “The Refrigerator” Perry in a cake-eating contest that she entered dressed as Marie Antoinette, complete with a corset that she unzipped once she got onstage. Perry, a “guest eater” who was paid for his appearance, placed 10th out of 10. Winner Rich Lefevre ate a five-pound cake in 11 minutes, 20 seconds. Other results were not reported on the International Federation of Competitive Eating website. Shishaldin said there were problems weighing cake after the contest and some controversy over the rules, which didn’t allow eaters to dip cake in water. “Some of the eaters were really upset,” she said.

Shishaldin has apparently shifted from competitive eating to running. Her old blog announces a goal of running a marathon in every state before she reached the age of 30. Her current blog has an entry about participating in a six day race.

Columbia, SC area eating challenges

The University of South Carolina has an article about restaurants in the Columbia, SC area that have eating challenges or contests. The article describes an attempt to break The Whig’s 40 taco record held by Joseph Tolbert:

Self-proclaimed taco-lover Patti Carson aspires to surpass Tolbert’s record some day.

“I’m positive that I have a chance,” 28-year-old Carson said.

She gave it a try earlier this year and managed to eat 24 tacos, 16 shy of Tolbert’s record.

She said she had trained by eating loads of hamburgers, cheeseburgers and eggplant parmesan the week before her attempt. She even created jerseys and foam fingers for her friends reading “Team Taco,” and crafted a homemade taco-shaped hat for herself. She is commonly referred to at The Whig as the “Taco Mascot.”

Indian woman seeks Guinness hot chili pepper eating record

(From slashfood) Yahoo News has an AFP article about an Indian woman’s quest for a Guinness world record:

Anandita Dutta Tamuly, a 26-year-old mother, is headed from Assam to London at the invitation of the record-noting institution to see how many Bhut Jolokia peppers, native to the state, she can eat at one sitting.

Tamuly, who hails from a remote village, believes she will have little trouble in beating the previous record, set by South African Anita Crafford, who ate eight jalapenos in a minute in 2002.

The Bhut Jolokia peppers are 100 times hotter than a jalapeno. The government of Assam is helping sponsor Ms. Tamuly’s trip. (Critics of competitive eating would probably say that subsidy could be better spent on the poor of India 😉 )
