The Philadelphia Daily News has a short article about “Horsemen of the Esophagus” author Jason Fagone.
Erik “the Red” Denmark has a detailed writeup of Saturday’s Nathan’s hot dog qualifier at Sunrise FL with the top 8 finishers. If the 3rd place finisher was Bryan Miller, he also had strong performances at Krystal qualifiers in Savannah and Jacksonville last fall. I am curious if there was any PETA presence at the contest.

Conti’s time of 5:04 was almost 3 hours behind the winner’s course record of 2:07.
Brian Seiken has a few more details about the controversial finish to the Nathan’s qualifier in Sunrise, Fl on Saturday. It is surprising that there are no articles, blog entries or buffet message board posts with additional details about this contest two days after it took place.
This translated blog entry says that the “Gluttonous Queen” contest broadcast on TV Tokyo April 2 received good television ratings. Hopefully this will result in more eating contests broadcast on Japanese television, including contests in which Americans compete.
If you are curious how Eric “Badlands” Booker managed to upset Sonya Thomas at the Buffalo Wing Festival last year, cluckbucket.com has detailed information on his personal wing eating technique along with over a dozen other wing eating styles.
Brian Seiken has emailed me that there is a divergence of opinion regarding who controls entry into next month’s United Pickle eating contest at the Carnegie Deli. United Pickle, the contest sponsor, has given control of the contest field to Cookie Jarvis and Brian Seiken while the owner of the Carnegie Deli believes he will decide who will compete. Seiken says that he and Jarvis will not compete if any AICE members are entered and they are expecting other IFOCE members to honor their boycott.

The eigth episode of Brian Seiken’s TV show, featuring Tim Janus, is now available. “Eater X” appears in studio and phone calls from the audience are taken for the first time. Janus offers information about the conflict with Dale Boone at the US Open and says that MTV is producing a sequel to its documentary about competitive eaters. A commercial of Badlands Booker at IHOP (which had virtually no audio on my computer) and a phone interview with Brian’s nephew who is a star of an MTV2 show are also displayed.
beautifulbrian.com and an anonymous commenter state that Crazy Legs Conti won the Sunrise, Fl Nathan’s qualifier with 24.5 hot dogs in overtime. Conti and Joe LaRue were tied with 21.5 hot dogs after twelve minutes.
Ryan Nerz’s hometown paper, The (Columbus, IN) Republic, has an interview with the author of “Eat This Book.”
There is also a podcast of Nerz’s appearance on Wisconsin Public Radio (The Nerz segment starts at 40:00). Nerz mentions that Tim Janus has left his Wall Street job (perhaps to pursue whaling full time?)
The party for “Eat This Book” will apparently be on May 3.
The website for the Stockton, CA Asparagus Festival announces that the winner of the 2004 deep fried asparagus eating contest, Sonya Thomas, and the winner of the 2005 event, Joey Chestnut, will face off in the 2006 contest to be held on April 22. Sonya will stop off on the west coast en route from returning from her homeland of South Korea.
Mojo’s Authentic Barbecue of Leominster, MA is holding a rib eating contest on Sunday, April 23. The winner will receive $200. The entry fee is $50, but proceeds will go to benefit Ginny’s Food Pantry. The contest will have a duration of 30 minutes.
Erik “the Red” Denmark has a preview and odds of Saturday’s Nathan’s qualifier in Sunrise, Florida. It appears that the Boeing employee is trying to single-handedly create a market for his company’s products. In less than a month, the Seattle resident will have competed in the NE, SE and SW corners of the country.
Although Ed Krachie’s dream of having his “Belt of Fat” theory published in the New England Journal of Medicine has yet to be realized, it has received mention in another prestigious Boston area publication. The Harvard Independent has an article about Nathan’s Famous hot dog eating contest focusing on Kobayashi’s achievements.
After the MacArthur Center in Norfolk hosted Sonya Thomas’ record for Nathan’s qualifiers last year, eaters at that location will try to set another record. A Peep eating contest will be held at that location tomorrow.
Leyla Milani of NBC’s “Deal or no Deal” game show (and former WWE Raw diva search participant) claims to have eaten four hot dogs and buns in under a minute.
The new poll asks what you think will be the largest number of hot dogs eaten at any Nathan’s qualifier. I believe the current record is 32 by Sonya Thomas at Norfolk last year (I am not sure how many hot dogs Kobayashi ate in the 2001 Tokyo qualifier) Joey Chestnut announced on the buffet message board that he plans to attend the Philadelphia qualifier, which is also the closest qualifier to Sonya Thomas, so it might take 35 or more hot dogs to win that event.
Liz K attended Love Ahoy (a live “Dating Game” parody) last night which featured a hot dog contest overseen by Crazy Legs Conti and has a writeup on her blog. Eaters were judged by style and not speed or amount.
Liz also emailed me that urban honking has a map of the country with all the upcoming IFOCE contests using the platial.com website.
Pat Bertoletti has emailed me that Tuesday’s Teachers episode on NBC had a Teacher’s Olympics, in which one of the events was a hot dog contest won by a slender Asian-American woman. “According to Jim” and “Gray’s Anatomy” are other shows in which a Sonya Thomas based character has appeared in an episode.
People who are waiting for a fictional competitive eating movie to be completed do not need to wait for “The El Wingador Story” to be finished. The Gloucester Daily Times reports that a short film based on the Salem Witch Trials, “Gluttonous G. Goforth”, in which the defendant is a female competitive eater was produced in under 48 hours.
explorernews.com has a writeup of Saturday’s jalapeno popper contest in Tucson by a would be contestant (there was not a slot for him) There are some quotes from winner Joey Chestnut. The article explains why Friday’s amateur contest winner, Loppi Joe Kerschner, should have added an “s” to the start of his nickname for Saturday’s contest.
5th place finisher Erik “The Red” Denmark also has a contest writeup on his blog.
PETA has put out a press release announcing that a protest will be held during the Nathan’s qualifier in Sunrise, Florida. The anti-animal cruelty group is also calling on Nathan’s to produce a meatless hot dog. Time will tell if PETA’s protest is more successful that Clarence Mertz’s efforts to stop the Sheboygan Bratfest contest.
newtimespbp.com has information about this Saturday’s Nathans qualifier to be held before the Florida Panthers game in the BankAtlantic Center in Sunrise, Florida. The contest will start at 6pm and there is no admission charge (there might be a fee for parking) According to the buffet message board, the following eaters are expected to attend:
Joe LaRue
Crazy Legs Conti
Hall Hunt
Erik Denmark
Loren Yarbrough
Larry McNeil
Weather for Saturday is expected to be partly cloudy with a high of 82 and a low of 71.
Two competitive eaters have been members of their national ultimate frisbee team. Nobuyuki “The Giant” Shirota, was the tallest member of the Japanese team before he quit in 2004 to focus on competitive eating, which would pay off in a second place finish at Nathan’s. “Loppi” Joe Kershner, winner of last Friday’s amateur jalapeno popper contest, played on the US Juniors team in 2004, which went undefeated at the World Championship in Finland.
Megamunch has done further analysis on the picture of Eric “Badlands” Booker wearing a helmet. The photograph with the helment and without the helment are exactly the same except for Booker’s head. The odds that large areas of two pictures taken at different times would be exactly the same are miniscule, but other unlikely things have happened at Denny’s Beer Barrel Pub.
