Competitive eating videos on ifilm

STBW.com starts commentary page

A page called “Sonya’s View: A Peek Inside the Web” has been started on SonyaTheBlackWidow.com. The initial column concerns Sonya’s relationship with the IFOCE/MLE:

Oftentimes when I visit various competitive eating- (CE-) related Web sites, regarding some of the differences between Major League Eating (MLE) / International Federation of Competitive Eating (IFOCE) and independently affiliated CE organizations, I ask myself where I feel I belong. That question was easily answered in the past, as no organization could have treated me any better than the most highly esteemed IFOCE — and the people in that organization — as they continue to be the best of the best!

Does that mean that there have not been challenges? No, not at all, as is the case with anything in life. But since life is about variety and broadening one’s experiences, I look forward to the possibility of new relationships and new challenges.

Cookie Jarvis gives thumbs down to MLE DVD

(From BeautifulBrian.com) Cookie Jarvis is upset that IFOCE used footage of him in the MLE DVD without requesting permission:

This is the last straw IFOCE! It’s no longer a joke and neither are our feelings. If someone requests an interview with us we have to first call the IFOCE and get their permission so they can profit at our expense. If the IFOCE wants to put out a movie with us in it they feel we don’t need to be told. Is that fair? NOOOOOOO!

I think its time for us to have a spokesperson on how we are treated and the events that our portrayed with our likenesses. I believe it’s also time for us to have input in what we are shown in. Maybe it’s even time for a class action law suit against the IFOCE because we wont take it anymore. This is an outrage!

“Pros vs. Joes” pizza contest in WashingtonPost.com

The Washington Post’s Sports “Bog” has an entry about Sunday’s “Pros vs. Joes” pizza contest that is mainly about Redskin Kedric Golston. Some of the best eaters on the Redskins are mentioned:

Guard Randy Thomas has entered eating contests before; Golston labeled him “a legend” and said “I need to call him and figure out how to warm my stomach up.” Former D-linemen Renaldo Wynn and Joe Salave’a were “definitely in the top five” of Redskins eaters, but they’ve both been released. (Demetric Evans, though, is not an eating star; “he’s too pretty,” Golston said.)

Gal Sone’s secret weapon

The Mainichi Daily News has an article (in English) about one of Natsuko “Gal” Sone’s favorite products:

Her handlers say her secret weapon is Hane Niju (Double Feather), the revolutionary new toilet paper she uses.

Made by Mochizuki Seishi, a paper company based in Kochi, Hane Niju is Japan’s highest quality toilet paper. It sells for 195 yen for a single roll compared to the average supermarket price of 298 yen for a dozen rolls.

“Gal Sone started using the paper after she was given some as a present while appearing on TV in the summer,” the Watanabe Entertainment spokesman says. “She’s been hooked on it ever since.”

Wingador & US Male in Flyers AYCE seats

The Philadelphia Flyers website reports on two spectators at a recent exhibition:

When it comes to competitive eating, Bill “El Wingador” Simmons and Dave “U.S. Male” Goldstein sure know how to pack it in. These top dogs enjoyed Comcast-Spectacor’s “All-You-Can-Eat” section on Tuesday, September 24, at the Philadelphia Flyers game against the New Jersey Devils. The “All-You-Can-Eat” package features hot dogs, soft drinks, popcorn and nacho chips and salsa. These two Wing Bowl wieners ate a combined total of 62 hot dogs, 8 nachos, 10 popcorns and 20 sodas.

The “All-You-Can-Eat” tickets for Philadelphia Flyers games can be purchased exclusively here, by calling 1-800-298-4200 and at Wachovia Complex Box Office.

This philly.com article has more information on the Flyers & 76ers tickets which include all you can eat food.

Philly.com reported on El Wingador’s current activities in August:

El Wingador, the five-time champion of 610 WIP’s Wing Bowl, opened and closed his El Wingador’s to Go (4th & Girard) restaurant earlier this year.

He’s brought his special wing sauce to Just Sports Bar & Grill (600 Route 413) in Bristol, where he’s now a minority partner. Main owner is Sandy Fischer, who by day runs a company called Mortgage Discounters.

Wingador, aka Bill Simmons, hosts at the bar on Mondays and on “Wingador Wednesdays.”

He’s training to return to Wing Bowl next year to battle current champ and eating machine Joey Chestnut. Wingador will hold wing contests at Just Sports, with winners getting a spot in his Wing Bowl entourage.

GJoe wins Bubba Dogs contest

The website for Bubba Dogs reports on the hot dog eating contest it held Saturday:

Well, it was a great day. We ended up with 10 contestants on Saturday and had a phenomenal time. Most importantly, we raised $2000 for the Fallen Heroes Fund. The winner was Gentleman Joe Menchetti who gobbled 18 hot dogs in 12 minutes. It seems that Joe was taking it easy as he knew he had it in the bag. Below are the pix from the day (click on them for larger view). The weather cooperated and we ended up moving from the promenade at JFK to the La Costa complex parking lot. This proved to be the right move as most of the festivities were taking place in this area anyway.

GulfNews error on Kobayashi’s gender

GulfNews.com, based in the United Arab Emirates, has an article about competitive eating which gets one significant fact wrong:

But people who compete in such bizarre contests, always live to tell the tale. Surprisingly they are people who are reed thin, of course some of them are pleasantly plump, but not walking health disasters by any stretch of imagination. The Japanese girl who won last year’s hamburger eating competition, Takeru Kobayashi weighs 160 pounds and ate 97 hamburgers in eight minutes!

The most surprising of them all is a thin Asian girl called Sonya Thomas who weighs 105 pounds and holds at least 20 records for diverse food items such as crab cakes, fries and nuggets. The most striking of her records is that of eating 9.75 pounds of deep fried okra in less than 10 minutes and 46 crab cakes in 10 minutes!

Eaters in Record Holders Republic

The Record Holders Republic website describes its purpose as:

Record Holders Republic is devoted to world records, unusual stunts and/or feats. Created by record holders for record holders, it’s goal is to provide a place where other record holders can point to their accomplishment on the world wide web and at the same time display their accomplishment with an attractive Official World Record Certificate.

Record Holders Republic is expanding with new inquiries and submissions on a daily basis. Just recently the International Federation of Competitive Eating (www.ifoce.com) has added their extensive data base of world eating records.

Two competitive eaters appear on the list of top record holders: Peter Dowdeswell with 51 records and Sonya Thomas with 23.

This BBC article says Peter Dowdeswell has raised £4,500,000 (about $9 million ) for charity in his eating career.
