The Izushi noodle contest was held Saturday. The Nurse (嘉数åƒæµ) (Google can’t translate her name), 3rd place finisher in the “gluttonous queen” contest, won the overall contest with 95 small plates of noodles (no other famous eaters competed). There were 270 participants including children and 11000 plates of noodles were prepared. It is surprising that the minimum age for all contests was not raised to 18 after the controversy after the death of the schoolboy who was imitating a competitive eating stunt in 2002.
The following blog entries and articles about the Izushi provide an overview of a typical Japanese contest that is not a made-for-TV event: Sea Bass blog, Much & Fast (written by the contest runner up), KTV and MBS.

(From The Tube Sock Destroyer) The current edition of Entertainment Weekly has mini-book reviews of the two competitive eating books which award a grade of B+ to “Eat This Book” and A- to “Horsemen of the Esophagus.”
There is a new book out called “Insatiable” which might be why the title of Jason Fagone’s book was changed.

If the 3rd place finisher was Bryan Miller, he also had strong performances at Krystal qualifiers in Savannah and Jacksonville last fall. I am curious if there was any PETA presence at the contest.

Brian Seiken has emailed me that there is a divergence of opinion regarding who controls entry into next month’s United Pickle eating contest at the Carnegie Deli. United Pickle, the contest sponsor, has given control of the contest field to Cookie Jarvis and Brian Seiken while the owner of the Carnegie Deli believes he will decide who will compete. Seiken says that he and Jarvis will not compete if any AICE members are entered and they are expecting other IFOCE members to honor their boycott.

The eigth episode of Brian Seiken’s TV show, featuring Tim Janus, is now available. “Eater X” appears in studio and phone calls from the audience are taken for the first time. Janus offers information about the conflict with Dale Boone at the US Open and says that MTV is producing a sequel to its documentary about competitive eaters. A commercial of Badlands Booker at IHOP (which had virtually no audio on my computer) and a phone interview with Brian’s nephew who is a star of an MTV2 show are also displayed.

There is also a podcast of Nerz’s appearance on Wisconsin Public Radio (The Nerz segment starts at 40:00). Nerz mentions that Tim Janus has left his Wall Street job (perhaps to pursue whaling full time?)

The new poll asks what you think will be the largest number of hot dogs eaten at any Nathan’s qualifier. I believe the current record is 32 by Sonya Thomas at Norfolk last year (I am not sure how many hot dogs Kobayashi ate in the 2001 Tokyo qualifier) Joey Chestnut announced on the buffet message board that he plans to attend the Philadelphia qualifier, which is also the closest qualifier to Sonya Thomas, so it might take 35 or more hot dogs to win that event.
