Denny’s 123 lb. burger turned into dog food

StarGazetteNews.com has a column about Denny’s Beer Barrel 123 pound burger and its unveiling ceremony February 24. The burger did not have the most glorious ultimate fate:

The burger party included a burger-eating competition won by a Virginia man. Ian Hickman, 23, downed his 5-pound burger in 14 minutes, 45 seconds. Pat said five minutes later, the guy was chomping down on a big piece of chocolate cake. Pat said the 123-pound burger, after people gawked at it for a few days, was turned into dog food.

Introducing Gal Ikeda (ギャル 池田 亜紀)

(Image from ken-blo)

Natsuko “Gal” Sone was not the only entrant in Sunday’s “Gluttonous Queen” contest with dyed blonde hair. Aki Ikeda, who has the nickame Gal Ikeda (ギャル æ± ç”° 亜紀) also sported non-natural hair coloring (she also has the nickname girayunee (ギャルネエ) ). Ikeda finished 5th overall and reportedly is missing a front tooth, which might facilitate bone stripping in a chicken wing eating contest.

Competitive Eating compared to hockey fighting

nerdsonsports.com compared competitive eating to another sport after eating the Godzilla Burger (two half-pound beef patties, four slices of cheese, bacon and onions) at the Eagle Deli in Boston in 4 minutes

Power Gluttony and NHL brawls have more similarities than one might initially think. Both are violent and messy affairs. Both generally end with one person throwing their hands up in surrender (or passing out). And both outwardly appear like nothing but barbaric, unplanned chaos. I want to set the record straight on that last point, though, as a lot of though goes into both pursuits.

Barbadian claims Guinness onion eating record

NationNews.com reports on the Barbados World Record Festival:

The event of the day though was the onion-eating competition, which last year’s pizza-eating Guinness Book record holder Nyron Weekes was hoping to swallow. This time around he was no eating match for Samuel Grazette.

It took only three big bites and it was all over in an amazing 48 seconds. The previous record was held by an Italian in 1.29 seconds. [I assume that should be 1.29 minutes or 1 minute 29 seconds]

Newsday on the termination of Ben’s Deli’s matzo ball contest

Newsday has an article on low cost marketing. Eating contests are listed as one inexpensive method of promotion, but it was not cost effective enough for one former contest holder to continue its event:

Look at Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest and Ben’s Matzo Ball Eating Contest. Nathan’s July 4th contest continues to be a big media draw, and Ben’s generated a lot of buzz until its last eat-athon in 2004.

Ben’s bowed out after a decade when the contest became “more expensive and less effective,” explains Scott Singer, president of Ben’s Kosher Delicatessen Restaurants & Caterers in Hicksville.

“We got a tremendous amount of media attention for a number of years,” says Singer, who estimates that the cost of the month-long promotion ranged from $30,000 to $80,000 each year. In the end, the contest became more of a venue for the professional food eater circuit than a contest for its local patrons, he says.

Burger challenges past and future

Brian Seiken reports that Don “Moses” Lerman and “Krazy” Kevin Lipsitz intend to attempt the Black Rock Tavern’s 5 pound burger challenge on April 5. Cookie Jarvis might observe, but does not expect to attempt the megaburger. The Yaphank, NY establishment’s myspace page says that its expected opening date is April 4.

(Thanks Brian Seiken) In a previous burger challenge, supersizedmeals.com did an entry in December about Brian Seiken’s report on the Doodle Burger challenge and Tim Janus’ breaking the record there.

Gal Sone repeats as “Gluttonous Queen”, Tomoko Miyake 2nd

eating01small.jpg eating02small.jpg tshirt02small.jpg

herpdaddy watched last night’s “Gluttonous Queen II” contest and wrote a blog entry in English about it (he also has some funny Japanese T shirts with English on them in his post.) He reports about the final noodle contest:

So she made it to the final round with 2 other women both equally thin and the final round was ramen noodles. Mmmm. I mean, it’s GOOD but how much can you really eat? Apparently an incredible amount. Each serving was a standard sized serving but they got a break. So they don’t burn themselves, they did not have to drink the soup. But they did have to eat all of the noodles and the major toppings including a thin slice of Chinese roast pork.

I have to admit, I was glued to the TV. I mean, it’s just 3 girls pigging out but it was just amazing how much they were able to put away.

In the end, Gal Sone won for the 2nd year in a row with 16 bowls of ramen in 1 hour. Eeeeeeeeesh…

Tomoko Miyake came in second (possibly tying with another woman) with 14 bowls. I believe that Suguwara was removed by medical personel (like “The Artist” was in last fall’s gluttonous king contest), but I am not sure about that. Hopefully R Suzuki will have a full writeup.

“Gluttonous Queen” produced a conflict over television watching in one household last night: (automatically translated by Google)
