Kobayashi receives Guinness record after eating 7 HDB in 3 min

Youtube has a clip of Kobayashi receiving a Guinness record after eating 7 hot dogs in 3 minutes. The record Kobayashi attempted to break was 4 hot dogs in 3 minutes and not 23 bunless hot dogs in 3:10 by Lynda Kuerth that was listed by Guinness before it stopped printing eating records in its books in the late 1980s.
R Suzuki has more about the program which says that Kobayashi had to eat sitting down using only one hand and had to show a clean mouth before proceeding to the next hot dog.

Phil Yazdzik’s 1955 record attempts
Google News has two free articles about Phil Yazdzik’s record attempts from April 1955 where he ate 77 burgers (containing 20 pounds of meat) and 1.5 gallons of milk in 2.5 hours and 31 orders of fried chicken (his goal was 40 servings). His typical diet follows:
For breakfast he usually consumes 14 hot dogs and 2 quarts of milk. For lunch he likes 3 dozen eggs, two more quarts of milk and several pounds of cold cuts. His favorite dinner consists of four huge servings of spaghetti and meat balls.
1970s articles on Guinness eating records
The Los Angeles Times did an article in 1972 on the eating and drinking exploits of Eddie “Bozo” Miller, called the “World’s Greatest Trencherman” by The Guinness Book of World Records which is now available for free. Part 1 | Part 2
A Chicago Tribune article from 1978 about Guinness record holders describes Lynda Kuerth breaking of the hot dog record the previous year:
Indeed, hot dogs proved the ticket. [Jimmy] Davenport gulped down 20 in 3 minutes, 33 seconds to set a new world record. Yet, uneasy is the head that wears the crown, so Davenport embarked on his quest to tighten his grip on the 1978 edition. He then halved the existing time for eating 2 1/2 pounds of shrimp. He confronted his old nemesis and bettered the time for swallowing 14 hard boiled eggs, a record held by England’s redoubtable Peter Dowdeswell. (who also is beer-drinking king). Davenport defended his titles in Baltimore, New Orleans, and finally headed for Philadelphia and Veterans Stadium, where, before 32000 witnesses, he planned to put away the frankfurter record for keeps.
How could he possibly have recognized the dangerous pretender to the throne, the slim young woman beside him, whose mysterious smile alternated between Davenport and her imposing franks. Little did he know this was the legendary Lynda Kuerth, whose name first had made news after she consumed 15 banana splits at Olivet College, Olivet, Mich. Little did Davenport know that, while he was downing his strategic pre-contest meal the night before (“to swell the stomach”), Kuerth was tossing down baked potatoes, salads, and four T-bone steaks at Jimmy’s Steak House. And when the big scoreboard clock read 3 minutes, 10 seconds, the amazing Kuerth had stolen both the hearts of the screaming crowd and the title with an astonishing 23 frankfurters.
Already Kuerth has heard rumors of 22 hot dogs eaten since, hot dogs eaten since, but she’s confident she can turn back any challenge. She modestly attributes her unique process to nothing more than cool nerves and high metabolism.
The Sports Illustrated archive has a long 1979 profile of the McWhirter brothers, co-founders of The Guinness Book of World Records which reports that Norris McWhirter personally decided that the sausages used in the hot dog record should weigh 2 ounces.
The AP reported on a 1979 event in Washington State where participants attempted to break various Guinness eating records. (No attempts were successful.)
IFOCE contest & Man vs. Food coming to Mallie’s (Detroit area)
The News Herald reports that Mallie’s Sports Bar in Southgate, MI (Detroit area) will host an IFOCE sanctioned calamari contest on May 30 when it unveils a 185 pound burger to break the Guinness record it currently holds:
They are teaming with the International Federation of Competitive Eating for an eating contest May 30 during what they have pegged the restaurant’s Guinness Burger Eating weekend. They are offering a $5,000 cash prize to the winners of the eating competition, and will hold a preliminary contest to seek local eaters.
The preliminary contest will be a hot dog eating contest at 2 p.m. May 3 and 10. There are six spots.
At the official eating contest, contestants will be consuming calamari.
But that won’t be the end of it. In September, the Travel Channel show “Man v. Food†is slated to come to Mallie’s to eat an “absolutely ridiculous burger,†Mallie said.

Indian woman eats 51 bhut jolokia for British TV

(from Paul Barlow) The The Daily Mail reports that Anandita Dutta Tamuly ate 51 bhut jolokia peppers, considered the spiciest peppers in the world, in 2 minutes in Jorhut, India. Chef Gordon Ramsay of Hell’s Kitchen observed the feat, which will appear on a program he is producing for the British network Channel 4. She also rubbed the seeds from some peppers in her eyes.
AFP reports that Gordon Ramsey served as the official monitor for the Guinness Book of World Records, which requested that Ms. Tamuly’s pepper prowess be observed by “someone responsible”. She had hoped to receive a Guinness record for eating 60 bhut jolokias in 2 minutes in 2007, but no such recognition was apparently bestowed. The current official Guinness pepper eating record is 8 jalapenos in a minute.

Kobayashi fails to break Sonya Thomas’ fruitcake record

The New York Daily News has a report on Kobayashi’s attempt to break Sonya Thomas’ IFOCE fruitcake record at Gabriella’s Restaurant. Kobayashi fell 6 ounces short of the mark set by the “Black Widow” in a 2003 contest (and Badlands Booker’s amount in that competition as well). Kobayashi said the density of the fruitcake, which he had never eaten before, made it difficult to consume quickly.
MSNBC has a picture. Cookie Jarvis also attended the event.
NBC San Diego has video from the event. 14 pounds of fruitcake were on hand.
update NBCNewYork has two videos. Cookie Jarvis and Badlands Booker ate alongside Kobayashi at the end of his attempt to get him past the threshold. Kobayashi did not resort to dunking the fruitcake even when the record appeared in doubt.
Sonya Thomas has a comment about Kobayshi’s record attempt on her news page.
Update #2 Kobayashi’s attempt was mentioned on ESPN Sportscenter. Here is a clip (20 seconds .9 MB)
NY1 News also has a video clip
Pat Bertoletti Guinness pizza record attempt
Pat Bertoletti has posted a blog entry to his yardbarker blog about the Guinness 12 inch pizza record he and Hall Hunt attempted to break while he was in Fort Pierce for the Battle of the Big Apple pizza contest. The record is listed at 2 minutes and 14 seconds and the video is 36 seconds long.
Largest crowds in competitive eating history
To have a World Series related post, I looked up the attendance for the July 12, 1977 Philadelphia Philles game during which Lynda Kuerth set a Guinness bunless hot dog eating record to compare with other listed CE attendance figures. Ms. Kuerth’s mark of 23 frankfurters in 3 minutes and 10 seconds was listed in the Guiness Book of World Records until at least 1988. Retrosheet lists the attendance of the 5-4 Phillies victory over the St. Louis Cardinals as 32,618. (Interestingly, the game only took 2:07 despite 9 runs, 18 hits, 10 walks and 7 stolen base attempts)
Other competitive eating attendances:
- GJoe says that the hot dog eating contest held during the 2005 Fiesta Bowl had the largest crowd in competitive eating history. The attendance figure for that game was 73,519
- Police reported that the attendance figure for the 2007 Nathan’s finals is 50,000
- 35,000 attended this year’s Nathan’s finals according to the NYPD (Gersh Kuntzman says the actual attendance was closer to 5,000)
- Wing Bowl attendance before tickets were required was listed as 24,000 – 25,000 at least that many were turned away from the 2005 Wing Bowl
In other Phillies related news, I can attest that “The Truth Hurts”, who posted anti-Philadelphia comments in another thread, is not Brian Seiken, who has not engaged in pro sports smack talk on his website or this blog as f
