Chris Cooley’s competitive consumption career

Randy Thomas and Renaldo Wynn are not the only Washington Redskins to have participated in eating contests. In a post for the Yahoo! sports blog Shutdown Corner, Chris Cooley writes about his competitive eating experience:

The Ritz Carlton in St. Louis has the most unbelievable bacon I’ve ever tasted. Not only did I love the bacon, everyone on the team was blown away by the taste. Three or four of us decided to forget all other foods and have a bacon-eating contest. I won with 39 pieces and was was sick on the floor for the next hour in the visitor locker room. We tried to keep up with the contest, but no other bacon was up to par with St. Louis.

I’m not saying that someone can go on the McDonald’s “Super Size Me” diet and be a great athlete, but so much more goes into the sport than what goes into a player’s body. Someone might assume that a healthy eater would be a much better football player, especially at any skill position, and I would almost have to agree with him or her. But, as I finish up my sixth Mountain Dew for the day, I have proved to myself that my diet has continually worked for me. I eat what makes me happy, but I put in a tremendous amount of hard work as well. I’ve thought about trying to change, but there is something to be said about four consistent and healthy seasons in the NFL (I have never missed a practice), as well as going to the Pro Bowl.

Sonya Thomas judges contest at Capitals game

sonyacapitals1.jpg sonyacapitals2.jpg

AOL fanhouse has a report and gallery from a hot dog contest held in honor of Dollar Dog Night at yesterday’s Washington Capitals game in which students from several area colleges competed. Virginia Tech student Alex Malycke won a pair of Southwest Airline tickets by eating 7 hot dogs in 3 minutes. Sonya Thomas served as judge and also performed a one minute exhibition.

The Washington Post DC Sports Bog and On Frozen Blog also have reports about the contest (thumbnails above are from On Frozen Blog). On Frozen Blog also has a video of Sonya’s exhibition. Sonya’s moratorium on dunking food in water was not in place during the exhibition.

The owner of the Capitals, Ted Leonsis, is also an executive at AOL, which probably helped in the contest receiving the publicity it did.

In other news about the NHL’s Southeast division, if the Nathan’s qualifiers start at a Florida Panthers game in March as they have the previous two years, we are about a month and a half away from the beginning of that series.

update A longer video is available on youtube which begins with an interview with Sonya.

A few months ago, the Palace of Wonders was sold to the owners of Mount Pleasant’s Radius Pizza and Tonic Restaurant. They’ve decided to resurrect the H Street funhouse’s competitive eating events, but with a twist: Instead of racing to eat hot dogs, 10 contestants have to finish an entire large pizza from Radius, crust and all. There will be gift certificates for the winners
