An amateur wing eating contest will be held on Saturday which has previously awarded its winner a spot in Sunday's wing eating contest.
Fatality at Peter’s Clam Bar eating contest
Newsday reports that Island Park Fire Department volunteer Michael Fischer passed away after suffering a cardiac arrest while attending yesterday’s clam eating contest at Peter’s Clam Bar in Island Park, NY. The article does not mention if he participated in the eating competition. This is not the first eating contest fatality associated with a New York first responder. In April 2017, Caitlin Nelson, daughter of a Port Authority policeman who perished in the 9/11 attacks, choked to death during a pancake eating contest at Sacred Heart University. update News12 reports that the incident happened while Fischer was helping set up for the contest.

Eater X, injured Joey Chestnut at weigh in
The Nathan’s weigh in was held today. Joey Chestnut was in crutches. He made a instagram post on December 29 about a leg injury requiring surgery. Tim “Eater X” Janus was present; it was not clear if he will be a competitor. His last eating contest was in October 2015.

Seaside Signal has an article about Cameron McKirdy taking on Eric "Badlands" Booker and 6 other lemonade drinkers in the chugging undercard contest for the July 4 Coney Island hot dog eating championship. Booker's participation in the chugging contest probably implies that he will not be competing in the hot dog eating contest. This will be McKirdy's first MLE event since July 2010.
