Houston gyros entrants listed before registration opens
IFOCE.com reports the 2009 Niko Niko’s World Gryo-Eating Championship will be held on May 16 in Houston and registration will begin today at 3pm eastern. The contest page already lists four expected entrants (Joey Chestnut, Pat Bertoletti, Bob Shoudt, Erik Denmark) even though registration has not officially opened.
College Station, Texas Wing Bowl May 6
The Arctic Wolf Ice Center in College Station, TX will hold a Wing Bowl on May 6. As in the Philadelphia Wing Bowl, entrants can qualify by winning a preliminary Wing Off contest or doing an on-radio eating stunt. The final Wing Off will take place tomorrow at Buffalo Wild Wings.
Hotel by Big Texan owner to have 89 ounce steak
Amarillo.com has an article about a planned hotel for downtown Amarillo. Big Texan Steak Ranch owner Bobby Lee is one of the investors in the project and a hotel restaurant will have an 89 ounce steak to pay homage to both the 1889 founding of Amarillo and the 72 ounce steak at the Big Texan. Diners who complete the 89 ounce steak will not only receive the meal free, they will also get their hotel room at no charge as well. The planned opening date is summer 2010.
Runner to attempt breakfast taco record after 200 mile run
The200MileRun.com announces a non-stop run by Christopher Huang which will begin in Houston on Thursday, March 19 and end in Austin on Saturday. After completing the run, an attempt will be made to break the breakfast taco record at Juan in a Million, which is currently 7 by the “Hong Kong Hero”. The goal of the run is to raise money for Space12, a community center in East Austin.
Woman has fastest time on online “Mega Mel” Wall of Fame

The website for Mel’s Country Cafe in Tomball, Texas (suburban Houston) has a web page with pictures of several finishers of the Mega Mel burger and their times. Lindsay has the fastest time of 19 minutes on that page.
The page about the restaurant on localism reports that the all time record is 9 minutes and apicture of the finishers list reveals that Eric Attayi is the record holder.
In a youtube comment, the son of the restaurant’s owner reports that Lindsay is the new female record holder and she came back a month later and finished another Mega Mel in 21 minutes.
FullFiguredFella is organizing a Mega Mel eating contest.
SykoBozo vs. Bacon Explosion
(from comment) The Houston Chronicle has a video of David “SykoBozo” Cagle attempting to eat a “Bacon Explosion” at Lucky’s Pub. There is also a blog entry about the challenge.
El Mañana: Jalapeño Festival wants local competitors
La Sanbe has a blog entry commenting on an article from elmanana.com.mx about the Jalapeño Festival that will take place in Laredo, Texas on February 20 & 21 which mentions the eating contest where Pat Bertoletti holds the record of 266 peppers in 15 minutes:
One issue of concern, though, is that participants for the jalapeño eating contest are not being solicited via the Food Network website as was done last year. Organizers want the contest represented more by locals. Great. So now we’re lowering the standards of our recreational activities too. Way to go Laredo.
The Spanish paragraph about the contest and its translation by Google follows:
Para la competencia de Jalapeño de esta edición, ya no se anunciará en internet, como se hizo el año pasado en la página de la Food Network, pues se quiere que los participantes sean locales, ya que es un festival de Laredo.
Jalapeño competition for this edition is no longer advertised on the internet, as it did last year at the site of the Food Network, as it is to the participants are local, as it is a festival of Laredo.
If the Laredo jalapeño contest is not affiliated with IFOCE in 2009, there could be a 4+ month gap between contests since the last IFOCE contest was the Battle at the Big Apple World Pizza Eating Championship in Fort Pierce, Florida on November 8.
The Stockton Asparagus Festival’s website announces that the contest on April 25 will have IFOCE eaters, so that will break the drought at 5.5 months if no other contests take place before it.

The foreword of the Story of the Free 72 oz. steak, which is now available at Barnes & Noble, can be read online. The webcam for 72 ounce steak attempts remains, but the finishers database, which was removed in 2005, has not been restored.

This week’s challenge restaurant, Juan in a Million, has an online Wall of Fame for its breakfast taco challenge, but it does not appear to have been updated since about 2002. The actual current record is held by the “Hong Kong Hero” who ate 7 breakfast tacos in 2004.
