MySanAntonio interviews Sonya Thomas

MySanAntonio has a preview of Saturdays’ Krystal Square Off qualifier which contains an interview with Sonya Thomas. update The Krystal Square Off blog also has an interview in which Sonya comments on sitting out last year’s finals:

Look, I’m a fast food manager and my staff and I take great pride and work long, rigorous hours in preparing orders for our customers, who love our food. I have seen Krystal burgers getting disrespected more and more every year to the point that I didn’t want to contribute to that image any more. A Krystal burger went into the water, but what came out was something that looked like it probably could have been eaten with a spoon. It made my heart so heavy to think about being a part of that. I know how I would feel if I saw people drowning the fast food items that I pour my blood, sweat and tears into preparing each and every day. There’s just something wrong with that. The least someone can do is eat our food the way it was intended to be eaten.

The Krystal Square Off blog announces that 2 minute pre-qualifiers will be held in San Antonio on Friday. The top 2 eaters will be able to compete in Saturday's qualifier at Six Flags Fiesta Texas.
The Krystal Square Off blog announces that Sonya Thomas and Erik "The Red" Denmark will compete in the August 29 qualifier at Six Flags Fiesta in San Antonio. Hall Hunt will compete in the Jacksonville qualifier on Labor Day.

A hot dog eating contest ($200 for 1st place / $100 to the runner up) will be held at the Texas Throwdown Car Show & Concert in San Antonio tomorrow Sunday.

The winner of the women's division at the San Antonio tamale contest ate 19 tamales in 2 minutes according to JD Flores' twitter.
Delicious Tamales will sponsor a tamale eating contest in San Antonio on Saturday, April 18. $250 will be awarded to both the winner of the men's and women's division (registration)

Dickey’s BBQ San Antonio results thread

Please place results and any other information about the Dickey’s pulled pork BBQ qualifier held in San Antonio on Saturday. It appears as if this contest took place under a media blackout.

Southwestern contests w/ $500 purses

Flancer’s Cafe in Gilbert, Arizona is hosting a pizza eating contest April 20 that will award $500 to the winner. The contest entry fee is $30.

Delicious Tamales in San Antonio is holding a tamale eating contest on April 26. The competition will have separate divisions for men and women and each contest will award $250 to the winner. The registration deadline is April 18.

San Antonio Macho Burrito results

Las Palapas 25th anniversary Macho Burrito contest results from Dan Calderón:

10 hungry hopefuls scarfed down two of Las Palapas’ famed Macho Burritos. The three fastest times were rewarded with checks for $1,000, $500 and $250.

Chris Flores, a 32-year-old San Antonio resident who lives near Helotes, won the top prize of $1,000 and set a new record by finishing his Macho Burritos in 68 seconds. Flores said it was his first eating contest.

Adolph Perez, a 19-year-old Converse resident who played right guard for the Judson High School football team last season, took the $500 second place prize. Perez, who is studying radiology at St. Philip’s College, took 1 minute, 15 seconds to finish the two one-pound burritos.

The $250 third-place prize went to San Antonio’s John Smavely, a 19-year-old construction worker with Handy Solutions. Smavely also was entering his first eating contest.
