If you thought you ate too much pumpkin pie this weekend, you can take comfort in the fact that you probably did not eat as much pie as the competitors in a pumpkin pie eating contest. The Ringling Brothers & Barnum & Bailey Circus had an eating contest for its elephants as they settled into winter quarters in Tampa.

The “Helen Haggerty” incident has made me realize that I have become way too wrapped up in this website and I need to spend the remainder of this week completely away from IFOCE competitive eating. There will be no posting about IFOCE events, comments by registered or unregistered users allowed or emails read until Sunday at the earliest. I hope everyone has a Happy Thanksgiving.

Does anyone have prize money breakdown?

The video shows it is rather clear cut that Sonya merited disqualifying. She is taking the DQ with equanimity on her website.
Brian Seiken will also have video he recorded later today. He spoke to Sonya after the contest and said she told him she got turkey caught in her adam’s apple.

The Manchester Evening news reports that the “World Pie Eating Championship”, held at Harry’s Bar in Wallgate has altered its rules to appease the health lobby. The contest format was originally an eat all you can in 3 minutes, but now the winner will be the eater who can eat a single meat pie in the fastest amount of time. A vegetarian pie eating contest was also added.
This is a different contest from the IFOCE endorsed mince pie eating contest that will be held a week from now.

The Toronto Star has an excellent writeup of the Eat Your Face Off contests:
With the salesmanship of Ron Popeil and the bombast of Ed McMahon, the heavily-sideburned Chapman is emceeing this competition, frantically barking the play-by-play throughout — “You’ve got to finish your milk! Your momma always told you, you’ve gotta finish your milk!” — including the two amateur meets, the first of which kicked off the entire show, right in the middle of the casino.

Duhneese had El Toro Jimenez as her hotel bellman when she stayed in Las Vegas. She said that El Toro claimed he would appear on the game show “1 vs. 100” in December.
This will make two NBC IFOCE appearances in about a month which is surprising since the IFOCE contests are on ABC/ESPN. Kobayashi appeared on Saturday Night Live recently.

The Cibola Beacon has an article about the posole contest with a different list of results than can be found on IFOCE.com:
World Posole Eating Championships
1st Place – Pat Bertoletti $1000 – 9lbs, 2.25 oz
2nd Place – Tim Janus $500 – 8lbs, 10.75 oz
3rd Place – Rich Lafevre $350 – 8lbs, 8 oz
4th Place – Erik Denmark $250 – 7lbs, 5 oz

I am rather disappointed at being lied to and made a fool of and this will probably affect the future direction of eatfeats. 🙁 Thanks to the people who alerted me that something was fishy this morning.

Angelo Cataldi has more information about Wing Bowl 15 in his new blog entry:
On November 27, the new theme (which will provide an advantage to locals at the expense of out of towners) will be announced and requests to perform qualifiying stunts will be taken.
On December 4 (the day of the Eagles/Panthers Monday Night Football game), tickets will go on sale and a new commissioner to replace the late Eric Gregg will be named. Tickets will still be $5 and the event will be held at the Wachovia Center on Feb 2 The prizes will reportedly be better than the previous year and better than any other competitive eating event in the US, meaning the purse value will have to exceed the $30,000 paid out in Krystal Square Off III.

There has been speculation that “Helen Haggerty”, listed as the runner-up in Saturday’s posole contest in New Mexico was a hoax given a lack of closeup pictures of her and any internet presence. Andrew Lane has posted a gallery of the contest with a picture of “Helen”. The picture in its original state is too dark to make out any facial features, but after playing with the brightness and contrast, the image on the left reveals “Helen” to clearly be Tim “Eater X” Janus.
I am quite upset by this incident and it will affect the future direction of eatfeats, but I am going to wait until I am better composed until I elaborate further.

Helen Haggerty has started a blog at helenhaggerty.blogspot.com with a short contest report. She is already looking forward to her next contest, so hopefully we will avoid a situation where an impressive competitive eating debut is followed by immediate retirement. Ms. Haggerty claims that playing college field hockey is responsible for her impressive performance.
Before this extended weekend started, you probably would not have expected that two novice women would win prizes in eating contests and both would be recent Seven Sisters graduates who competed in sports. Gretchen Salyer was a member of the Harvard / Radcliffe crew team.

From IFOCE com:
Sky City Posole contest results:
1. Pat Bertoletti, 146.25 oz.
2. Helen Haggerty, 138.75 oz., recent Bryn Mawr graduate
3. Rich LeFevre, 136 oz.
4. Erik “The Red” Denmark, 117 oz.
5. “Mongo” Marquez ?
6. William “Wild Bill” Myers
?. Andrew “Skinnyboy” Lane, almost 64 oz.
Ms. Haggerty’s performance is probably the most impressive debut for a woman in an IFOCE contest (and possibly the best performance by a newcomer for either gender) The only comparable female debut would be Sonya Thomas setting the American women’s record with 18 hot dogs at the Molly Pitcher travel plaza Nathan’s qualifier in 2003, but she did not defeat a top 10 and top 15 eater and almost beat the #3 ranked eater at that event.
All top 4 finishers beat Carlene LeFevre’s 2004 record of 109.75 oz., assuming the contests were the same length.
updatedAndrew Lane competed and has a brief blog entry. He will have a longer report later.
updated #2 miningjournal.net has an article about Matt “Foracious” Forss which claims he will in the posole contest.
