QueenMary.com has a list of entrants for today’s chili cheese fries contest. All eaters ranked #2-#8 are expected. The full list is available after the jump. The contest is expected to take place between 1 and 2 pm (4 and 5 pm eastern)
There has been little press coverage for this contest. This brief article about Jed Donahue was the only preview I could find.

(from sonyatheblackwidow.com) AroundPhilly.com has an interview with Sonya Thomas in which she says she will not eat “exotic” foods in competition. The Spike TV Saint Patrick’s Day contest will have a beef tongue round, so that might prevent Sonya from participating in that event.

IFOCE announces that the cable network Spike TV will broadcast four Major League eating events in 2007 starting with the Saint Patrick’s Day Showdown in Savannah, GA which will be televised from a same day tape on March 17 at 7pm. The new contest will be a tournament similar to Broadway at the Beach and Takeru Kobayashi, Joey “Jaws” Chestnut, Sonya “The Black Widow” Thomas, “Humble” Bob Shoudt and Chip Simpson are expected. The other three events to be televised in 2007 have yet to be determined. It is not mentioned if Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating contest will remain on ESPN or be shifted to Spike.

I recently came across this article and video on wjz.com about a pancake eating contest held at Pete’s Grille in Baltimore in November. Johns Hopkins student Liz Gilbert won the women’s division with 10.5 pancakes in a hour. She won the division in 2004 and was DQed in 2005. There is an article about Ms. Gilbert in the Johns Hopkins newsletter in which she describes why she competes in eating contests:
“Eating is such a faux-pas for women. Eating and food, for American women, is too big a deal. I like to see people take it less seriously, take their bodies less seriously, and this is something that’s emblematic of that,” she said.
“[Expletive deleted] it. I don’t care if people think I eat a lot. If you keep a regular diet and exercise and feel good about yourself, I don’t see why you can’t go out and do something excessive every once and a while.”
5th place men’s finisher Scott Yin also gets an article in the Johns Hopkins newsletter. Only the first name of the men’s division winner, Lee, is listed.

We’d like to feature a fan who idolizes Ed “Cookie” Jarvis or Tim Janus along with others, who’d like to start competiting in the sport. If anyone is interested please email me at:

The Jewish Exponent has an article about Dave “US Male” Goldstein who finished in the top five of Wing Bowl 15. Goldstein’s qualifying stunt was eating letters, which he accomplished by eating pancakes shaped like letters of the alphabet instead of paper items.
Most readers of this website will probably disagree with the following paragraph (and one will definitely beg to differ):
Goldstein now becomes arguably the best Jewish Wing Bowl competitor, surpassing 2002’s “Lord of the Wings” Alix Friedman and last year’s “Hungry, Hungry Hebrew” Adam Taxin, who both failed to make it to the second round when they competed.

From the latest entry on The Whaler’s blog:
A message from Tim Janus.
I want a kidney. Not for me. Not for dinner. But for my mom because hers are failing.
You can help if you pass this information on to people you know or if you’d consider undergoing laparoscopic surgery* to donate one of your kidneys. First, however, it’s important that you understand that Transplant Ethics and Law require that neither I, nor anyone, give you anything in return for your generous intention and the gift of life you are giving when you give your kidney. Your transplant expenses would be covered, but the gift must be freely given.
My mother is a good person, a caring friend to many and a therapist who helps others cope with life’s challenges and make positive changes in their lives. I can’t begin to adequately express my admiration and love for her. It exceeds anything of which many of you would think me capable. Now she needs a living kidney, and neither my sister nor I are good matches for her.
To be a donor you need to be a generally healthy adult with Type “O†blood, who has not had any of the following health problems:
Cancer
Diabetes
Elevated blood pressure (although elevated cholesterol may not be a problem)
Serious heart problems, such as previous heart attack or use of stents.

Kobayashi’s rival in “Man vs. Beast” is not the only competitive eating bear. Toonzone.net summarizes the pilot episode of “Utica Cartoon” by Fran and Will Krause which ran on the Cartoon Network in 2001.
When Dan Bear and Micah Monkey learn that they can get free hot dogs by beating the current hot dog eating record at their local diner, they are up for the challenge. Dan Bear reigns as hot dog champ by consuming loads of free hot dogs, continually beating his own record. For awhile he enjoys the free franks until beating the record becomes too much even for him.
The episode is availabe in quicktime format at frankrause.com (Low quality 16MB) (Medium quality 31MB) The clip is about 7 minutes long.

A column in the University of Wisconsin student newspaper has a list of possible new jobs for fired San Diego Chargers coach Marty Schottenheimer (this column was mentioned by Rhonda Evans in a previous comment) One potential new employer for Marty is listed:
Thomas certainly is no slouch when it comes to scarfing down Nathan’s hot dogs, Moon Pies or creamed spinach casserole.
But, she can’t beat Kobayashi, the Roger Federer of digestion. Ol’ Tabasco Schott knows a little bit about eating, as legend has it he once out ate the entire Charger offensive line at a team lunch meeting. He might not get her to the top, but the practice throw-downs should be more fun than watching sumos high dive.

An ESPN.com poll for the 5 members of the 2006 All-Sports team (which is still open) is the subject of a thread on a forum for fans of speedskater Apolo Anton Ohno. Some commenters helped put their hero in the #1 position in that poll and knock Kobayashi out of his early lead:
Whoa! You definitely CAN vote more than once, with rapid-fire! Just ‘refresh’ the voting results page and click ‘Retry’ when you get the message. I was able to vote again with just 2 clicks – about once per second. Within about 5 minutes I think I single-handedly brought David Eckstein from 1.3% to 1.4%! (Of course I voted for Apolo, too). (I know, I’m a techno-idiot, so if you already know this you can call me stupid – go ahead, I can take it…)
(A commenter on the thread thinks that Sonya Thomas should have been in the poll also)

Brandweek has an article about the advertising campaign for redesign of the Heinz Ketchup bottle which mentions Nelson Peltz’ desire to have Heinz cosponsor Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest.
More recently, Heinz CEO William Johnson has been locked in a bitter public fight with one his investors, Nelson Peltz of Trian Partners, New York. Peltz has argued that Johnson has nickel-and-dimed the brand, even failing to spend what he believes would have been about $200,000 to sponsor Nathan’s annual hot-dog eating contest, which has no condiments partner.
Johnson, however, has argued that it was he who came up with the plan to restart spending behind Ketchup. The recent pledge to evoke “Anticipation”-era ad spending is in Heinz’s 2006 annual report. The campaign will be created by Cramer-Krasselt, Chicago, a rep said.
