Deresque has information about the New Year’s Eve eating contest that Nobuyuki “the Giant” Shirota and “Gentleman” Joe Menchetti will participate in. The competition will be part of a professional wrestling / competitive eating extravaganza that will be televised on TV Tokyo. (Pro wrestling is called “hustling” in Japan.) Shirota had a giant spoon at the event announcing the contest.
The transcript of this press conference announces that Gal Sone will be having an eating contest with retired mixed martial artist / pro wrestler Antonio Inoki during the event. Inoki fought Muhammad Ali to a draw in a mixed martial arts contest in 1976.

The blog for Popular Science magazine has an entry analyzing Ken Domon drinking the contents of a plastic bottle in less than five seconds on Food Battle Club. The blog believes he would not have been able to repeat the stunt using a glass bottle:
The plastic bottle is critical. If he were just holding it upside down, gravity would be doing most of the work, and that’s just not fast enough. Instead, he squeezes the plastic bottle, forcing half the water out. Next, he wisely pauses for a moment there in the middle of his chug, allowing air to creep up through the water and into the space between the new, lower water level and the interior bottom of the bottle.

The BBC reports that Adrian Frost won a meat pie eating contest in Wigan, England. The contest was threatened after a dog ate many of the competition pies the day before the event, but enough replacement pies were produced. The dog, Charlie, was allowed to repeat his gluttony in the contest:
“The twist is that Dave has turned up this morning saying he wants Charlie to enter the contest.
“We’ve nothing in the rules to say dogs can’t compete so he will be lining up against the other pie eaters and judging by his performance yesterday he’s got a great chance of winning.”
However, it seems that Charlie was still full from Wednesday’s mammoth eating session as Mr Williams revealed that he did not even finish his competition pie.

A new blog called Wet The Buns has been launched with the following introduction:
For a long time, I have been intrigued by competitive eating… not as a participant and not really as a spectator… I am more interested in its shear [sic] stupidity. I find it ludicrous that it’s considered by many to be a sport… yes, they actually have a governing body (The International Federation of Competitive Eating… www.ifoce.com) complete with rules, regulations, rankings, and record-keeping. And it’s even more ridiculous that this shit is televised.
Anyway, one night while eating (not competitively) with friends, the conversation turned to the Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest. One friend questioned how the competitors could consume so much bread in addition to the hot dogs. Without thinking, I replied “When in doubt, wet the buns” in reference to a technique used by the competitors where they dunk the buns in water for easier consumption. It all sounded so ridiculous, that the phrase stuck… a catchphrase, of sorts, representing all that I find stupid.
So, that’s what this site is all about… those things that I find stupid.
Before commenting on the stupidity of others, it would probably be advisable to learn the difference between sheer and shear

The Albany Times Union reports that Siena University has added a new seating option for its men’s basketball games:
Beginning Dec. 22 and for all remaining home games, Siena plans to introduce an all-you-can- eat option for its games at Times Union Center.
The school is offering a seat in the upper level that allows you to enjoy an unlimited supply of hot dogs, hamburgers, popcorn and fountain soda.
Come for the game, stay for the gluttony.
The cost per ticket is $25 for adults and $18.50 for children 18 and younger. Wristbands, which come with the tickets, will identify the gourmands. Peanuts are in cluded. Pepto-Bismol is not.

The San Jose Mercury blog reports that Joey Chestnut judged a hot dog eating contest at half time of the basketball game between San Jose State and Santa Clara. The blog entry is about the author getting an autograph from Joey.
I told him a friend of mine was a fan (again: not totally sure about this now), and I asked for his autograph.
I also told him I work at the Merc (at least until my editors read this) and was covering the game (full disclosure is always best).
For good measure, I asked if he is currently enrolled at SJSU.
“Yeah, but I’m only taking two classes,†he said. Then he paused and kinda half-grinned. “I do other things.â€
66 dogs in 12 minutes — I’d say that qualifies as “other things.â€
J.C. was really, really nice, and very polite, and he happily signed the autograph (FYI: he’s lefthanded).

The chili cheese fries eating contest held at the Queen Mary in Long Beach, CA was the most lucrative IFOCE event on the west coast in 2006 and 2007. The good news for the future of that contest is the recent emergence of the contest site from bankruptcy after selling to a group of investors called “Save Our Queen.” The bad news is the new owners might have different priorities for the marketing budget.
