Angelo Cataldi Wing Bowl 15 FAQ

Angelo Cataldi answers some commonly asked questions about Wing Bowl 15 in his blog.

Q. Why do you allow professional eaters into Wing Bowl?

A. There’s really no choice. This is an open eating competition, with the best prizes in the history of competitive eating. I guess we could discourage the pros if we didn’t offer a free car to the winner, but that might not even work anymore. Winning Wing Bowl is a big deal in itself these days. It gets national coverage. It draws 20,000-plus spectators every year. Since WIP is a radio station, we are governed by the FCC, which requires very specific rules for all contests. Excluding the pros is pretty close to impossible. We thought we got around it last year with the Virgin Wing Bowl, but two pros who had never gotten in before jumped at the chance.

Philly.com Wing Bowl page not being updated

I thought that the philly.com Wing Bowl videos page was not being updated because qualification attempts went on hiatus for the holidays, but qualifying stunts have apparently continued. Philly.com Wing Bowl notes says that “Obi Wing” recently qualified for the Wing Bowl. Obi Wing’s video cannot be found on philly.com, but it can be seen on youtube: Part 1, Part 2.

In other Wing Bowl news, “Dr. Martin Luther Wing” will try to qualify for the Wing Bowl tomorrow by eating chitlins. “Dr. Wing’s” manager is Wing Bowl 14 entrant Adam “Hungry Hungry Hebrew” Taxin says “Black history will be made this month of February.”

One way to eliminate junk mail

(From philly.com Wing Bowl page) Competitive eating has a male killer in Sonya Thomas and now it has a mail devourer. “U. S. Mail” qualified for the Wing Bowl by eating letters.

In another Wing Bowl stunt, the 3rd place finisher in the 2006 Wing Bowl, “Dr. WingLove” DQed during his stunt of eating 25 bunless hotdogs in 5 minutes. The parameters of his stunt were less stringent than the 23 bunless hot dogs in 3:10 Lynda Kuerth ate in 1977 in Philadelphia.

Comparison of baked bean records

With Micah “Wing Kong” Collins qualifying for the Wing Bowl by eating 3 lb 5.33 oz of baked beans in 43 or 48 seconds on Wednesday, I thought I would see how that performance compared to IFOCE record times for other amounts of baked beans:

Micah Collins 53.33 oz / (43 or 48 sec) = 1.24 oz / sec or 1.11 oz. /sec
Dale Boone 84 oz / 82 sec = 1.02 oz. / sec
Don Lerman 96 oz / 108 sec = .889 oz. / sec
Sonya Thomas 134.4 oz / 167 sec = .805 oz. / sec (thanks Luther)

The last two performances are in the IFOCE records. Dale Boone’s best performance is usually listed as 84 oz. in 1:52, but he ate that amount in 1:22 in Dawsonville, GA.
