Number of Nathan’s qualifiers per year
Here is the number of Nathan’s qualifiers held during a circuit (July 5-July 3) for each finals since 2003 as best as I can figure out. The 19 qualifiers scheduled for 2016-17 are the most since 2007-2008. This means that at least 44 people will qualify for the 2017 finals assuming Matt Stonie and Sonya Thomas receive byes (4 previous champions, 38 qualifier winners and 2 wild cards).

Carmen Cincotti’s surprise performance prevented the 2015-16 qualifier circuit from having no 40+ totals for the first time since 2004-5. (The leftmost column does not take ties into account.)

Here are the top debut Nathan’s hot dog performances based on announced results, which is an incomplete body of information. It appears Darron Breeden’s 28 is the top performance for someone who had not previously been mentioned on eatfeats since this website was started in 2005.

Matt Stonie's most recent defeat came at last year's Foxwoods turkey eating contest on November 22, 2014, so his winning streak now exceeds 365 days. This is the longest undefeated period in IFOCE/MLE since Takeru Kobayashi in 2001-2007. If Matt Stonie misses the shrimp cocktail contest in Indianapolis next month (he has not been listed as a competitor) he will have an undefeated 2015 (assuming no contests are added to the schedule).
