Comparison of baked bean records

With Micah “Wing Kong” Collins qualifying for the Wing Bowl by eating 3 lb 5.33 oz of baked beans in 43 or 48 seconds on Wednesday, I thought I would see how that performance compared to IFOCE record times for other amounts of baked beans:

Micah Collins 53.33 oz / (43 or 48 sec) = 1.24 oz / sec or 1.11 oz. /sec
Dale Boone 84 oz / 82 sec = 1.02 oz. / sec
Don Lerman 96 oz / 108 sec = .889 oz. / sec
Sonya Thomas 134.4 oz / 167 sec = .805 oz. / sec (thanks Luther)

The last two performances are in the IFOCE records. Dale Boone’s best performance is usually listed as 84 oz. in 1:52, but he ate that amount in 1:22 in Dawsonville, GA.

AC meatballs to be occasion for “Battle of the Generations”?

Don “Moses” Lerman called for a battle between the older & younger generations of competitive eaters to occur at Big Ed’s when the next major northeastern IFOCE contest was scheduled. Many eaters expressed interest in attending. The 3rd Meatball Contest at the Tropicana Casino in Atlantic City, NJ is scheduled for December 2. (Registration for that event is already closed) If the generation showdown is to occur, that contest would probably be the best occasion for it.

Happy Rosh Hashanah

Happy Rosh Hashanah to the Jewish readers of this site. This article from 2004 from the Jewish Week says that a quarter of the top 24 eaters were Jewish at that time, but I think a lot of those eaters have either retired or dropped down since then. Don “Moses” Lerman is the featured eater in that article.

Don “Moses” Lerman retires

Don “Moses” Lerman announces that he has retired from competitive eating on his blog. Brian Seiken has posted his memories of Lerman’s career. Lerman was the first eater to travel extensively throughout the country to compete in eating contests (there is no evidence that Lynda Kuerth competed anywhere outside Philadelphia) and probably also the first to actively promote and market himself. Lerman’s enthusiasm and passion for competitive eating will definitely be missed on the circuit. Perhaps Lerman could do precontest standup or karaoke (See Brian Seiken’s show for a sample)

With Lerman’s retirement, 7 of the top 15 in the Spring 2005 IFOCE rankings are currently inactive
1. Takeru Kobayashi, currently #1
2. Sonya Thomas, #3
3. Richard LeFevre, #8
4. Eric Booker, retired
5. Charles Hardy, retired
6. Cookie Jarvis, retired
7. Carlene LeFevre, retired
8. Dale Boone, suspended
9. Joe LaRue, #16
10. Timothy Janus. #6
11. Jim Reeves, #19
12. Allen Goldstein, #13
13. Crazy Legs Conti, #11
14. Donald Lerman, retired
15. Oleg Zhornitskiy, inactive since US Open

Exemptions to three Nathan’s qualifier maximum?

Don “Moses” Lerman has apparently worked out the glitches with mosesnews.com and in a recent post he says he intends to enter as many as six Nathan’s qualifiers. The registration page on Nathan’s website clearly states that the maximum number of qualifiers a competitor can enter is three. Is there an exemption to that limit for long time Nathan’s competitors? The three qualifier limit was enforced for Carlene LeFevre last year.

In other mosesnews news, Don Lerman says he intends to sell some of his competitive eating embroidered jackets on ebay.
