The website for the Stockton, CA Asparagus Festival announces that the winner of the 2004 deep fried asparagus eating contest, Sonya Thomas, and the winner of the 2005 event, Joey Chestnut, will face off in the 2006 contest to be held on April 22. Sonya will stop off on the west coast en route from returning from her homeland of South Korea.
Dan Reed of the San Jose Mercury News has an article about San Jose State student Joey Chestnut. Reed takes Joey to the Wendy’s on Monterey Highway in San Jose (where an extortionist claimed she found a fingertip in her chili) and he tries to consume eight containers of chili in 2 minutes. Chestnut will be competing in the Stockton Asparagus Festival, the site of his first victory last year.
The San Bernardino Sun has a flashback from 43 years today ago about a pancake contest for college students sponsored by the International House of Pancakes. Teams from over 50 colleges participated, including a team from Tokyo. Two San Bernardino Valley College students, Bruce James and Susan Moncrief, won the contest by eating 270 pancakes in 30 minutes. A breakdown of the amount of pancakes eaten by James and Moncrief is not provided.
Two contests in late April have been added to the IFOCE schedule, the asparagus contest in Stockton, California and the Sweet Corn Contest in Palm Beach, Florida.
The Long Beachcomber has an article about last Saturday’s Wienerschnitzel World Chili Cheese Fries Eating Championship at the Queen Mary. The article gives “El Toro’s” real name and also claims that a father & son duo (which the author probably mislabeled Joey and Paul Chestnut) competed in the event.
Thanks to IFOCE.com for providing a full listing of chili cheese fries finishers along with amounts eaten. A prize money breakdown besides the $4,000 first place amount is still not available.
A breakdown of the $10,000 prize money allocation would be appreciated.
Sonya mentions on her website that she is going to cut down on the number of events she enters. I hope her reduction in contest frequency is her own choice and not the result of other factors.
The Queen Mary website has a page about Saturday’s chili cheese fries contest. The list of expected entrants includes the top two finishers in last Friday’s Wing Bowl 14, Joey Chestnut and Rich LeFevre, along with Southern California’s top eater, Jed Donahue. Sonya Thomas is not listed as one of the expected competitors. Garret Morris, a member of the original Saturday Night Live cast, will compete in a celebrity sausage eating contest.
Ian Hickman won the Farmer Boy’s Fried Zucchini contest held in Riverside, California on Saturday, his second consecutive victory. After taking Joe Menchetti’s current hiatus from AICE events into account, there does not appear to be any active eater on who can impede Hickman’s rise to the top of that organization.
Every year before the Rose Bowl, the teams playing in that game have a Prime Rib eating contest at Lawry’s Steakhouse called the Beef Bowl. The teams dine during separate sessions and then their total amount eaten is tallied up and compared. Texas ate 740 pounds of steak at their dinner (the size of their party is not given). The totals for USC have not officially been released yet, but it is claimed that they tied with the Longhorns.
Duncan Scott Davidson, a writer for the San Francisco Bay Guardian, has a report of his experience as a competitor in the San Francisco Verizon VoiceWing buffalo wing qualifier held at Knuckle’s sports bar in October. In that contest, Rich LeFevre defeated Cookie Jarvis in double overtime. Davidson managed 1.97 pounds of meat in 10 minutes. If you are interested in who won the $250 third prize, which was never listed at IFOCE.com, it was triathlete Chris Coble.
The Philly Cheese Steak Shoppe, with two locations on the northern California coast, has a challenge involving a three foot long cheesesteak . Eaters who succesfully finish the sandwich in under two hours will qualify for a contest to be held at the end of the year. (It is not mentioned if the meal is free for those who finish it in time.) The winner of that competition will be awarded free cheesesteaks for a year and be featured in the restaurant’s advertising. The best time recorded in the challenge so far is 40 minutes by Bill Telnes.
An article about last Saturday’s Verizon Voicewing Buffalo wing qualifier has finally appeared in the form of an editorial in Thursday’s Oakland Tribune. The author has the right to voice whatever opinions he wants about competitive eating, but not to print incorrect facts. He claims that Kobayashi and Joey Chestnut appeared in that contest.
pe.com has a column (registration required) by someone who participated in last Monday’s grilled cheese contest at the Southern California Fair. He finished with 8 sandwiches, which he found rather unappetizing. There is also a video.
Rich LeFevre made a triumphant return to his previous hometown at the Verizon VoiceWing Buffalo wing contest in San Francisco, defeating Cookie Jarvis in double overtime on Saturday. This is the second double OT contest “The Locust” has been involved in this year (He lost to Sonya Thomas in the MTV popcorn contest in June.) Rich and Cookie’s regulation total of 4.92 pounds is considerably better than Joey Chestnut’s winning total of 4.51 from the Seattle contest. Three other competitors qualified for the finals in Boston, but are not listed. (From IFOCE.com, no article currently available).
At the Mississippi State Fair Sunday, Buffalo Jim Reeves won the Krystal qualifier with 27 burgers. David Ray of Yazoo City almost won with 26 and John Anderson finished took third with 20. “Krazy” Kevin Lipsitz appeared, but finished out of the money. This article from the Clarion Ledger mentions the contest. (Updated 10/17 10:33 am)
The San Jose Mercury has an interview about Cookie Jarvis in conjunction with the Verizon Voice Wing chicken wing contest to be held Saturday. The contest will be held at the Hyatt at Fisherman’s Wharf, which seems a more apt location for a seafood eating contest.
nctimes.com has an article about the grilled cheese qualifier held at the (inland) Southern California Fair at Lake Perris which was won by Jed Donahue with the impressive total of 20.5 sandwiches. The article focuses on Joe Camacho who ate 7 sandwiches. (2nd place, UC Irvine graduate student Justin Mih, did 14 and 3rd place (not named) did 13)
Updated 10/11 8:00 am – pe.com has an article about the contest (registration required)
The Golden Palace website has a page on the grilled cheese qualifiers with pictures and results from the San Diego and Sturgis events and a video from Detroit (but nothing from Springfield)
Sonya Thomas won the San Diego grilled cheese contest August 3. Her total of 21.5 sandwiches was a considerable dropoff from the 25 she ate in February. Rich Lefevre was second with 20 and Carlene LeFevre took third place with 15. Over the past month, Rich Lefevre has participated in eating contests in every region of the country except for the gulf coast.
