Actor Ryan Reynolds, author of an anti-competitive eating blog entry for the Huffington Post, is apparently not equally opposed to all activities which consume calories which could be redirected to the starving poor of the world. The website for People Magazine reports that the husband of Scarlett Johannson claimed on an episode of the Rachael Ray show that he ate almost 10,000 calories after finishing the New York City marathon.

The creators of some giant burgers are not satisfied with having hamburger as the only type of meat in their sandwiches. The Hawkins House of Burgers (several Los Angeles area locations) Special Burger contains 3 eight ounce hamburger patties, 2 hot links, bacon and pastrami along with 3 fried eggs (picture). The Gangster Burger, offerred by the Rice Street Deli in Saint Paul, Minnesota, contains two half pound hamburger patties, three 6 ounce steaks, a half pound of Italian beef and a half pound of gyro meat. Neither restaurant appears to offer any award or recognition to diners who successfully complete one of their huge burgers.

MSN.com has a list of the ten species with the biggest appetites compiled by the Animal Planet television network. The number 7 animal in the list, the Tasmanian devil, has the following caption:
Good thing the Tasmanian devil can’t compete in the annual Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest every Fourth of July; Joey Chestnut and Kobayashi couldn’t hold a candle to this creature’s pace. The Australian outback native can swallow up to 40 percent of its body weight in just 30 minutes — that’s the equivalent of a human eating 216 hamburgers in the same amount of time! The Tasmanian devil will actually eat to the point that it can barely waddle around, and is particularly fond of anything that smells like flesh. So if you’ve got some old boots or smelly socks, pass them to your left, along with the salt and pepper.

A trailer for the web series Quest for the Golden Hot Dog can be viewed on youtube. The 60Frames production will be a parody of the world of competitive eating. A clip from the series of an interview with two hot dog girls (Bunettes) is also available.
TubeFilter.tv has more on the series including a cast of some of the characters:
In the trailer, the competitors are introduced as they all ram hot dogs. There’s the novice rookie played by Jeff Sloniker. There’s the Asian natural (likely a nod to Kobayashi himself), but played by a woman, Micki Ann Maddox. Armen Weitzman plays the role of the sitting legacy. Jeff Davis is the Hungry, Hungry Hipster And Demorge Brown is the Black Bomber, and he’s well, black.

More sad news from Asia. The Times of India reports that Saurav Sabbarwal, a solutions engineer with Nokia Siemens Networking, died after choking in a pastry eating contest held at an office cafeteria in Guragon, India. It is not clear if the contest was pre-planned or an informal competition.
Nokia produced a commercial featuring a competitive eating fan who uses her phone to get contest updates.
update The contest was apparently a company activity and there was no medical supervision present. Mr. Sabbarwal’s family is considering suing Nokia Siemens.
