Baltimore Dog food eating contest for humans

MyFoxDC reports that Natural Balance sponsored a dog food eating contest for dog owners at Baltimore’s Inner Harbor. The competitors ate food from the Eatables for Dogs brand, which is marketed as being made in a USDA plant with 100 percent USDA ingredients. Jimmy and Dick Van Patten (“Eight is Enough”) served as emcees.

Badlands Booker at “Binge Olympiad”

(From Cole Wimpee) BroadwayWorld.com reports that Eric “Badlands” Booker will appear at the Binge Olympiad which will be held at the Wings Theater in the West Village. Booker’s myspace calendar says he will appear at the August 15 and August 23 shows. Eating contests will be held during the festival, but dates and foods are not listed.

2008 IFOCE grits contest September 13

(From comment) IFOCE.com has been updated with information about the return of the Harrah’s Louisiana Downs World Grits Eating Championship to Bossier City, Louisiana on September 13. Like last year, the purse will be $10,000. Registration will open on Wednesday, August 13 at 1pm eastern.

After having no contest with a purse larger than $5,000 in the first half of 2008, five IFOCE contests in the the third quarter will award total prizes of at least $10,000 (Nathan’s, Krystal, OK BBQ, kolaches and grits)

Mike Fitzgerald wins Seymour Burgerfest contest

(From Mark Hinske) PostCrescent.com has a report on the Burgerfest held in Seymour, Wisconsin on Saturday. A caption reports that Mike Fitzgerald won the Hardee’s Thickburger eating contest by eating 7 and a third burgers in 12 minutes. Another caption claims that “The Hammer” also broke the contest record. Sonya Thomas ate 7 Thickburgers to win the 2003 contest, but the contest length was only 10 minutes. (The previous record is listed as 5.25 thickburgers)

A 120 pound burger patty was cooked during the festival and served to attendees.

Trickery alleged in Tomoko Miyake program

Nikkan Sports reports that the magazine “Modern Weekly” is alleging that Tomoko Miyake did not actually consume all the food she appeared to eat in a Nippon Television program.

Tomoko will appear (briefly) along with the other competitors in the giant burger contest held earlier this year at the Clinton Station Diner on the History Channel’s “Evolve:Guts” at 11 pm and 3 am eastern tonight

update The Mainichi Shimbun reports that Nippon Television has apologized for the deception and attributes the inaccuracies to miscounting.

British newspaper on competitive eating

The Independent of London has an article about competitive eating with a lot of quotes from Ryan Nerz which reports that 1.5 million viewers watched the Nathan’s finals. The article also claims that Badlands Booker has released 2 albums (he has produced four “Hungry & Focused” CDs) and that the Sacramento death in the bladder endurance contest happened in January (it took place in 2007). British competitor Lup Fan Yau believes that Sonya Thomas has made millions from competitive eating.

More KSO V qualifier information

Additional information has been added to KrystalSquareOff about the qualfier circuit. A list of the venues has been posted. Five of the sites are the same as last year’s. The Chattanooga qualifier will be held at the Southern Brewers Festival and the Alabama qualifier will take place at a University of Alabama at Birmingham football game.

The wildcard page says that the top three non-winning performances will receive wild cards. Ties will be broken by second best amounts.

The KSO V finals page lists Joey Chestnut as the only current finalist, so Kobayashi might have to qualify.

Amarillo.com on Joey Chestnut’s Big Texan record

Amarillo.com has a column about Joey Chestnut breaking the 21 year old record for eating the Big Texan’s 72 ounce steak meal in March. The steakhouse has no plans to start a televised contest despite the fame of its eating challenge.

Krystal Square Off V qualifiers announced

A page on krystalsquareoff announces the qualifiers for this year’s edition of the Krystal Square Off and a press release on Krystalist has the schedule:

Aug. 23 – Chattanooga, Tenn.
Sept. 1 – Jacksonville, Fla.
Sept. 6 – Atlanta, Ga.
Sept. 13 – Nashville, Tenn.
Sept. 14 – Knoxville, Tenn.
Sept. 20 – Birmingham, Ala.
Sept. 21 – Memphis, Tenn.

There will be three wild cards.

update Times Free Press has an article with podcast interviews of Bob Shoudt and Joey Chestnut. The purse for Krystal Square Off V will exceed the $35,000 last year’s contest awarded. Bob Shoudt says he hopes to eat 120 burgers, a pace of one burger per 4 seconds.

Bertoletti & Hall Hunt in Czech contest August 17

(from Hall Hunt) The website for the Trnkobraní festival in the Czech republic reports that Pat Bertoletti and Hall Hunt will be competing in an eating contest at that event on August 17. Kamil Hamersky, who participated in the 2006 Nathan’s finals is also expected to compete.

Krystalist: qualifiers start in approximately 2 weeks

The Krystalist blog has an entry about Jill Stoler’s 3rd place finish in the women’s division of the Chef One dumpling eating contest in Queens which mentions that the qualifier circuit for Krystal Square Off V will start in a “couple of weeks.” If qualifiers take place on weekends, this would put the initial qualifier on August 16/17 or August 23/24 depending on how the two weeks is rounded. This would result in 5 or 6 qualifiers if one qualifier a week is held.
