A big menorah & big eating

Happy Chanukah to the Jewish readership of this site. TotallyJewish.com has an article about a party in which the largest menorah in London, England was assembled from legos. (It is not clear if it is the largest menorah in London overall or just the largest menorah made of legos 😉 ) During the party, a doughnut eating contest was held. The winner ate 10 doughnuts, a better showing than Hank “the Tank” had in his Wing Bowl stunt today.

Comparison of baked bean records

With Micah “Wing Kong” Collins qualifying for the Wing Bowl by eating 3 lb 5.33 oz of baked beans in 43 or 48 seconds on Wednesday, I thought I would see how that performance compared to IFOCE record times for other amounts of baked beans:

Micah Collins 53.33 oz / (43 or 48 sec) = 1.24 oz / sec or 1.11 oz. /sec
Dale Boone 84 oz / 82 sec = 1.02 oz. / sec
Don Lerman 96 oz / 108 sec = .889 oz. / sec
Sonya Thomas 134.4 oz / 167 sec = .805 oz. / sec (thanks Luther)

The last two performances are in the IFOCE records. Dale Boone’s best performance is usually listed as 84 oz. in 1:52, but he ate that amount in 1:22 in Dawsonville, GA.

“Theeta” Rappai, India’s top eater, dies

ibnlive.com reports that Kurian “Theeta” Rappai of Thrissur, India died Saturday morning. The English translation of “Theeta” is big eater and he earned his nickname by forcing restaurants to drop their all you can eat specials. The article claims that Rappai once ate 15kg (33 lb.) of pudding in one meal. Reports of Rappai’s age vary. ibnlive says he was 65 while newindpress claims he was 63. Rappai retired from big eating this summer due to diabetes and other health issues. sarathc’s father knew Rappai and he describes the time Rappai exacted revenge on a buffet that charged prices different from what was listed on the menu.

updated The Peninsula has an article about Rappai stating he was 67. The life expectancy for Indians is 60 – 61 years.

Bodybuilding supplement company sponsors decentralized eating contests

Controlled Labs, a bodybuilding supplement company, has sponsored eating contests for hard boiled eggs and cans of tuna. What makes their contests unique is they do not take place in a central location. Instead, competitors record their efforts and upload videos of their performances to youtube or Google video. A clock must be visible in the video at all times. Videos of the winning performances, 12 hardboiled eggs in a minute and 6.75 cans of tuna in 3 minutes are available on line. The company is currently seeking ideas for the food to be used in its third eating contest. Winners receive a year’s supply of Black Hole, an appetite enhancer that suppresses the impulse to feel full after eating a large meal.

The connections between bodybuilding and competitive eating are stronger than an outside observer would expect. Not only is Kobayashi an avid bodybuilder, several other top eaters including Tim Janus, Bob Shoudt and Chip Simpson are into weightlifting as well. It would be interesting to see if Sonya Thomas working out with weights would improve her eating ability.
