Harry Reichenbach attended the mince pie eating contest at Wookey Hole caves last week and uploaded a longer video clip (almost 10 minutes) of that event to youtube at http://youtube.com/watch?v=DBuYlwGiWuM. Mr. Reichenbach had behind the scenes access and did a brief pre contest interview with Sonya Thomas. The Monday Night Football theme music was played before the contest, which I doubt any of the English audience had heard before.

(From Liz K) A bikini string french fry eating contest at Bikini’s Bar & Grill has been added to the IFOCE schedule on January 27, 2007. The total purse is $2000.
The press release on the restaurant’s website lists Joey Chestnut, Sonya Thomas and Tim Janus as the expected out of towners. (I am not sure if this means that Sonya has reconciled with IFOCE or if they added her as an entrant without consulting her. )

Why is there no eating news on this site. with everything that is happening you would think the whaler would have something to say. with humble bob cheating at meatballs …
from the main page of humblebob.com:
I am offering my first place purse of $2,500 to anyone, (eater, fan, official, anyone) that has evidence that this (cheating) happened at any Carmine’s Meatball Contest (2004, 2005, 2006). This offer is for payment in cash. Bring the evidence, take the cash. It is that simple.

The LA Times has a section about Josh Heald, the author of “All You Can Eat,” a screenplay set in the world of competitive eating in its screenwriter column. The article describes Mr. Heald’s first hand experience in eating contests. The movie has yet to begin filming.
Unsurprisingly, the major challenge in moving “All You Can Eat” into production has been casting — it would take some very game comic actors who are willing to be seen stuffing food in their faces for two hours while potentially risking a disqualifying “reversal of fortune,” in the lingo of the sport.

(Thanks Berenice Baker) From The Evening Telegraph:
Poppadom lovers guzzled as many of the Indian wafers as they could today in a bid to break the world record. A parliamentary aide, solicitors, rugby players and students were among competitors vying for the title in The Balaka, St Andrews. The winner was reigning champion, Dundee businessman Tim Stobbs, who scoffed 15 in five minutes, beating his previous 12.

A full video of the meatball contest and prize announcements recorded by LadyLenore is available on Brian Seiken’s website. Joey Chestnut and Bob Shoudt are interviewed briefly. Sonya’s snub of Humble Bob’s handshake occurs at the 18:12 mark.
The 2006 meatball contest was definitely the contest of the parent. Not only did the IFOCE’s top father, Bob Shoudt, take victory against a field containing of 6 of the top 8 IFOCE members, Juliet Lee had the best ever IFOCE performance by a mother if the reports in the comments that she finished 7th with a total of 5.51 pounds is accurate.
updated spikebythesea has posted videos of the contest to youtube which can be viewed at http://www.youtube.com/profile_videos?user=spikebythesea
Pat from Moonachie probably merited a spot closer to the center of the table based on his ranking, but putting him at the end was probably the optimal place based on what happened after the egg nog contest 😉

Joey says he had difficulty finding meatballs similiar to the contest meatballs and that he arrived at the Tropicana at 10am Saturday after a sleepless night. The article says that all top 3 eaters ate in the 9-9.99 lb range. The controversial judgement awarding Bob Shoudt the victory over Sonya Thomas is not mentioned.
