One month anniversary of bogus baseball list

It has now been one month since a bogus list of Major League Baseball players who were reportedly in the Mitchell report appeared on competitiveeatingnews.com Despite inclusion of names such as Albert Pujols and Johnny Damon that did not appear in the actual report, no corrections or other updates have been made to the CE News list in the previous month.

Manning brothers in Oreo eating contest ad

Today’s early NFL playoff game has a commercial in which Peyton and Eli Manning compete against each other in an Oreo Double Stuf eating contest where they have to lick the icing off as fast as possible. The commercial can be viewed at the website for the “Double Stuf Racing League”, DLSR.com. A video game can also be played at that website.

FCC radio station contest meta-rules

In a comment on megamunch, “Will” Bill Myers says he picked up a copy of the Wing Bowl 16 rules when he competed in today’s qualifier. Rule #2 follows:

Wing Bowl 16 is an IFOCE/MLE officially sanctioned and sponsored event, any member of, or person affiliated with, non-IFOCE/MLE professional eating organizations, including but not limited to AICE, are also not eligible to participate in the contest.

The FCC’s web site has a page about regulations about radio station contest rules which states that eligibility restrictions must be publicized in some manner from the time a contest is announced:

“Material terms” include those factors which define the operation of the contest and which affect participation therein. Although the material terms may vary widely depending mentioned in a cupon the exact nature of the contest, they will generally include: (1) how to enter or participate; (2) eligibility restrictions; (3) entry deadline dates; (4) whether prizes can be won; (5) when prizes can be won; (6) the extent, nature, and value of the prizes; (7) the basis for valuation of prizes; (8) time and means of selection of winners; and/or (9) tie-breaking procedures.

In general, the time and manner of disclosure of the material terms of a contest are within the licensee’s discretion. However, the obligation to disclose the material terms arises at the time that the audience is first told how to enter or participate and continues thereafter. The material terms should be disclosed periodically by announcements broadcast on the station conducting the contest, but need not be enumerated each time an announcement promoting the contest is broadcast. Disclosure of material terms in a reasonable number of announcements is sufficient. In addition to the required broadcast announcements, disclosure of the material terms may be made in a non-broadcast manner.

Wing Bowl rules do not appear on 610WIP’s web site. The Wing Bowl 16 page has “Official Rules for Wing Bowl 16” at the bottom, but there is no link or following information. I do not know how frequently WIP has announced Wing Bowl 16 eligibility restrictions on the air. We might get a chance to learn if the FCC views those restrictions as satisfactorily disclosed if an AICE eater files a new FCC complaint.

update GJoe’s FCC complaint mentioned in a previous comment is based on being excluded from a previous Wing Bowl, not the upcoming one.

Trappe Tavern Wing Off report

The Pottstown Mercury has a report on Thursday’s Wing Off at the Trappe Tavern won by Paul Sakelarides. Paul’s wife, Fran, was the only woman who competed, which probably suffices to make them the third best couple in IFOCE history after the LeFevres and Lipsitzs.

Competitive eating radio talk show hosts

Curtis Sliwa is not the only competitive eater who works as a talk radio host. Adam “Hungry Hungry Hebrew” Taxin, who will attempt a Wing Bowl stunt competing against a dog on Tuesday, has a one hour radio show on Tuesday afternoon on WNWR. Frank Pastore, who set the Big Texan 72 ounce steak record of 9.5 minutes in 1987, has a Christian talk show in Los Angeles.

Dallas & Pittsburgh WCS news

1033espn.com has a page about the Dallas Wing Championship Series, which will have its first round on Sunday. Details about the first round follow:

* Sunday January 13 – Boston’s Pizza in Grapevine
* Begins with pre-game show before kick off of Divisional Game 1
* Contest begins in between the conclusion of Divisional game 1 and kick off of Divisional game 2

* 3 minute per round
* Winners from each round move to the semi final round to compete against 1 other person. The winner of the semi final round goes to the Finals on Sunday, February 2nd.

Eddie “Bozo” Miller 1908?-2008

(from Carey comment) InsideBayArea.com reports sad news:

Eddie “Bozo” Miller, a gustatory giant whose eating and drinking prowess landed him in the Guinness Book of Records, died Monday at his Oakland home. He was 99.

Miller had struggled with diabetes, a weakened heart and kidney failure, though his family said he died of natural causes.

Miller once ate 27 2-pound chickens in a row and drank two quarts of liquor in the same hour. Both feats earned him a listing by Guinness.

“I never really had indigestion,” he said in an Oakland Tribune story in November, his last public interview.

Miller was one of Oakland’s true characters. He was a bookie, gambler, horse player, fight manager and restaurant owner. But his legend was made at the dining table.

Washington Post article
(claims Miller was 89 without explanation)
SF Chronicle obituary (age not listed)

The 1974 Guinness Book of World records claims Miller was born in 1909.
HappyHopsLand has a summary of Miller’s exploits which lists his birthday as June 11, 1909

update The Wall Street Journal has an article about Miller with a quote from George Shea:

He likewise regretted not being in his prime to take on Takeru Kobayashi, the terror of the Coney Island boardwalk who has dominated hot-dog-eating contests in recent years. “He said he would have ate him under the table,” recalls Mr. Blackman.

George Shea, chairman of the International Federation of Competitive Eating, says the organization will have a moment of silence to honor Mr. Miller at its Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island this July 4.

update #2 The San Francisco Chronicle has an article about Miller which says he could be either 89 or 99.

update #3 UPI has a short article reporting Miller was 89

No Oyster Bowl threepeat for Kristina Costa

The blog for the Princeton Oyster Bowl reports that two time defending champion Kristina Costa will not be able to defend her crown because she will be in South Africa during the contest. The website claims that the current favorites are 2005 winner Roy Cherris and Barbara Devaney, who lost to Kristina Costa in overtime in 2006. Last year’s first prize was a 42 inch plasma TV, this year’s prize has not been listed.

Bunless hot dog contests in Philadelphia

As far as I am aware, Lynda Kuerth’s 1977 mark is still the unofficial Philadelphia record for bunless hot dog eating:

Vegas buffets add time limits and surcharges

An attendee of the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas noticed changes in the casino restaurants offering all you can eat deals:

This year at CES I noticed one little thing that seemed to be a universal change among most of the casinos. The buffet lines around the city have posted signs informing customers that there is now a time limit on dining. (The most extreme case we saw was a 1 hour limit on a Sushi Buffet in the Rio.) They’ve also taken to charging extra for patrons who wish to indulge in the more expensive parts of the repast.

Jason Fagone catches up with El Wingador

PhillyMag’s blog has an entry by Jason Fagone recapping what has happened to Bill “El Wingador” Simmons in the three years since Fagone wrote about his victory in Wing Bowl 13. Simmons will not be receiving an appearance fee as he attempts to claim his sixth crown:

Bill says that Marc Rayfield, WIP’s station manager, told him that it’s against FCC rules to pay Bill for his trouble. (In case you need a quick taxonomy of the powers that be at WIP: Marc Rayfield is the stone businessman with his eye on the numbers. Angelo Cataldi is the cynical, exploitative, mediocre talker. Al Morganti is the cynical, exploitative, funny talker.)

This FCC excuse is a fairly hilarious one, since WIP has already been caught red-handed and fined for not running a fair contest. (link in original article)

Man vs. dog for Wing Bowl slot

Today’s Dan Gross column on philly.com is devoted to Wing Bowl 16 participants. One of the upcoming stunts might have been inspired by “Krazy” Kevin Lipsitz’s training methods:

In what could be the most bizarre of all Wing Bowl-qualifying challenges, attorney Adam Taxin, who competed in Wing Bowl 14 as Hungry Hungry Hebrew, will face off in the 610 WIP studios Jan. 15 against a dog, a Newfoundland. If he can out-eat the dog – they’ll eat kosher hamburger meat – he’ll earn a slot in Wing Bowl. Taxin, 36, who keeps kosher, will be allowed to eat kosher chicken wings in the competition. He is related to the family that owns Old Original Bookbinder’s and says that if he wins any Wing Bowl prizes, he’ll contribute them to Pups for Peace, which trains dogs to detect explosive devices in Israel.

Jeff Olson(who consumed 5 pounds of peanut butter to qualify), Bill “El Wingador” Simmons and Tiffany Heller, Joey Chestnut’s wingette, are also mentioned.

Rich Shea Phantom Gourmet podcast

Rich Shea’s interview on the January 5 Phantom Gourmet radio show mentioned by GJoe in a comment is available online. The interview is mainly about the buffet controversy in Louisiana, but Rich Shea does say that the next IFOCE event will be a Major League Eating program televised on Spike TV at halftime of the Super Bowl (Rich predicts that the Cowboys will be the NFC representative for that game). The program will be 30 minutes long, so “Ham & Eggs” will need to be truncated if it is broadcast.

Tomoko Miyake, queen of all media?

Tomoko Miyake did an interview for J-Cast. She says she might follow Gal Sone in crossing over into a music career and Kana Kanisawa in releasing a DVD.

January 1908 as a gravure idol debut in the spring, the photo book and DVD are set up. Rumors debut as a singer, but now I want to work any talent?

Miyake idol at the age of 24 is called what I think (laughter). I want Food program. Spa or go to the Chick brusque things out, eat delicious. Reporter ordinary people, a lot of food has been eaten not only not even a little bit? If I go to each location that can be eaten whole. Eat all the deeper I think you can report the shops and I think people are happy. I want to do that. Full.
