Naader Reda has a preview of this evening’s West Coast Hot Dog Eating Championship at The Derby Deli in Mission Viejo, which will start at 6pm Pacific (9 pm eastern).

Frank Ferraigne reports that Takeru Kobayashi repeated as the winner of the contest held at Pie Wood Fired Pizza in Barrie, Ontario with a total of 43 slices in 12 minutes. The Gringo Bandito Taco Challenge will be the first United States contest against other competitive eaters for Takeru Kobayashi since the Krystal Square Off 6 finals in September 2009. Takeru Kobayashi will compete against fans at the Gary (Indiana) SouthShore Railcats game on August 17. I think this will be Kobayahi's first Chicago-area appearance.

Prizes for the Gringo Bandito Taco Challenge have been announced: 1st 5,000 2nd 1,000 3rd $500 4th $250. The contest will take place in Huntington Beach, CA on August 3 and Takeru Kobayashi and Pete Czerwinski are expected to compete. Competitors will need to email a link to a youtube video to receive a spot in a qualifier.

The Brooklyn Paper claims that Takeru Kobayashi actually ate 65 hot dogs at his rooftop event in Manhattan instead of the claimed 69. A Yardbarker report (via Kobayashi twitter) about the event claims that "credentialled 'spies'" from Nathan's were responsible for the claims of a miscount, but does not name the spies or state what their credentials were. A video with an alternate superimposed has been uploaded to youtube. (via Darren Rovell twitter) update A Gothamist commenter claims that Kobayashi received a $15,000 appearance fee from 230 Fifth, more than Nathan's first place prize money.
