ESPNLosAngeles on Lawry’s “Beef Bowl”

ESPNLosAngeles has a column about the “Beef Bowl” held at Lawry’s Prime Rib for members of the Rose Bowl teams.

The truth is no one really knows which team eats more in the Beef Bowl anymore. The pre-Rose Bowl gorgefest has been around for 54 years, longer than all but five actual bowl games, but organizers haven’t kept official tabs on the exact amount devoured by each team since the 1970s when they stopped advertising it as an eating contest. Richard R. Frank, president and chief executive officer of Lawry’s Restaurants Inc., now admits that when someone asks for an exact number eaten by both teams, “someone will pull a number out of the air.”

Competitive eating called “male food porn”

Double XX has a column about Man vs. Food which describes the program as male food porn:

As cultural taboos against ungoverned appetites intensify, porn inevitably follows. And thus we have the phenomenon of expert gluttony. One manifestation of this phenomenon is the professional eating contests that take place under the banner of organizations like the International Federation of Competitive Eating and the Association of Independent Competitive Eaters. Another is that brand of television that showcases promiscuous mastication, with Man vs. Food being the current darling of that genre.

New York Magazine’s Grub Street blog has a response to the column which attributes the popularity of competitive eating to the “distaster factor”.

“Appetite of the Beast” at Iron Maiden’s drummer’s restaurant

(from Man vs. Food forum) The Broward Palm Beach New Times has an article about the opening of Iron Maiden drummer Nicko McBrain’s new restaurant, Rock N Roll Ribs, in Coral Springs, Florida. One of the items on the menu is called “The Appetite of the Beast”, which consists of 1.5 racks of ribs, a pound of pulled pork and beef, half a chicken, and side items of fries, beans, Cole slaw, corn on the cob, and Texas toast and is free to a diner who completes it without assistance.

The 22 inch “Big Unit” hot dog at Alice Cooperstown in the Phoenix area hot dog is the only other eating challenge offered by a restaurant owned by a rock star I am aware of.
