New Poll: Actual number of 96er finishers

In a recent blog entry, Wing Tut is skeptical about the claims that Kate Stelnick and Lori Weiss are the only people to finish Denny’s Beer Barrel Pub’s 11 pound 96er burger in under three hours. Neither woman has participated in any public eating contests or challenges outside Denny’s. The new poll asks how many people you think have actually finished the 96er in under three hours.

Italian hot pepper eating champion: .65 oz/ minute

UPI reports on the peperoncino eating contest in Albese in northern Italy. The winner, Franco Rotunno, managed 19.5 ounces of peppers in 30 minutes. Drinking water and wine and eating bread and potatos were allowed. The women’s division winner, Mariella Andreani, ate 8.8 ounces. Three Thais participated, making this contest perhaps the first with international representation in which the winner failed to eat more than an ounce per minute.

The case for Lori Weiss

In a recent blog entry, Wing Tut expresses skepticism about the claims that Kate Stelnick and Lori Weiss are the only people to complete Denny’s 96er burger in under three hours. There is a good deal of evidence to support Denny’s claims that Lori Weiss did accomplish what the restaurant claims. Lori Weiss ate the three pound burger (5+ pounds with toppings) in 36 minutes at a contest recorded for the Food Network in 2002, setting a record (which I believe still stands based on megamunch’s picture of the recent finishers of that burger) The archived versions of Denny’s websites have two articles about that contest:

Lancaster New Era
Clearfield Progress

I am not sure if this contest was ever televised by the Food Network since I have not been able to find any information about the show it was on. If it was, Lori’s appearance might have been cut.

Lori’s conquest of the 96er last July was documented in a blog entry at
http://baxojayz.blogspot.com/2005/07/4th-of-july-weekend-dennys-beer-barrel.html (Surprisingly, the blogger claims that the record Lori was aiming to break was under 2 hours, when the official mark by Kate Stelnick is 2:54. I am not sure if there is a lower unpublicized record or if he just got confused.)

If Lori Weiss’ feats are hoaxes, they are extremely well constructed ones.

Nathan’s quarterly earnings decline

Newsday reports that 2nd quarter earnings for Nathan’s Famous Hot Dogs declined to $1.8 million from $3.1 million in 2005. No explanation for the decrease is provided in the article. Nathan’s did say that earning from continuing operations increased 14.1 percent to $1.5 million. Buisnesswire has more details about Nathan’s results.

updated Bob Shoudt says that the drop in Nathan’s non-continuing earnings is due to the sale of a parcel of land in 2005 and 2006.
