Blogcritics.org has a review of the Hungarian film Taxidermia which is playing at the London Film Festival. The review summarizes the movie’s competitive eating scenes. It appears unlikely that IFOCE will give its seal of approval to this motion picture.
pittsburghlive.com reports that Bob “Killer” Kuhns won the first qualifier for Uncle Charley’s Sausage Eating Contest. The second qualifier will be held November 2 at Cupka’s II in the South Side. The top three finishers in both qualifiers will reach the finals which will be held on December 3 before the Steelers game.

The amazing grace blog has an entry about the Whoopie Pie Festival and reports that one entrant in the Whoopie Pie Eating Contest was so impressed by Ian “The Invader” Hickman’s performance that she did not go on stage to compete when her name was called.
Speedeat.com brings up a blank page. Hopefully this is a temporary glitch and does not mean that one of the longest running competitive eating websites has been shut down.
The Chattanoogan has the schedule for all the events to be held in conjunction with the Krystal Square Off Finals. The festivities will start at 2pm with a tailgating party. The contest will be broadcast live at 4:35 pm.
updated The Chattanooga Pulse also has a finals preview.
The Ionia (upstate Michigan) Sentinel Standard has an article about Thursday’s Chili Dawg Challenge. A 15 minute chili dog eating contest will be held during that event. The entry fee is $10 and no prizes are mentioned, but proceeds will go to benefit the Big Brothers / Big Sisters.

If you had difficulty listening to Eric “Badlands” Booker’s newest single, “Ya Must Be Loco” at beautifulbrain.com due to format incompatibility, it is now available at myspace.com/badlandsbooker/ Hungry & Focused III will be available for pre-order at that site on Halloween.
updatedBerenice Baker has a myspace blog entry about recording her guest appearance.
(From Greg Godden:) The online sportsbook bodog.com is taking bets on Saturday’s Krystal Square Off III finals. The top 5 favorites in that contest are:
Takeru Kobayashi 1/1
Joey “Jaws” Chestnut 3/2
Sonya “The Black Widow” Thomas 7/3
Chip “The Phenom” Simpson 9/2
Tim “Eater X” Janus 4/1
You can also bet on whether anyone will eat more than 70 burgers and will the entire field eat more than 645 burgers (the sum of everyone’s qualifying totals is 626 burgers)
Natsuko Sone is not the only petite Asian “Gal” attempting huge meals. Youtube has a clip of 5’0″ 95 lb. Chinese-Australian Lynette Chiang battling the 72 ounce steak challenge at the Big Texan Steak Ranch while on a Route 66 bicycling tour. She wrote a blog entry about her meal which says that diners ordering the steak must sign a contract saying they will not split the steak inside the restaurant.
There is additional information about her trip, including a DVD documetary for sale, at http://www.galfromdownunder.com/route66 The video clip can be downloaded directly from that website and there is a gallery (Page 1, Page 2, Page 3) of her meal. One of the picture’s captions says a waitress claimed a 110 pound woman ate the steak last week.
Thank “Wild Bill” Myers: The CSI episode set in the world of competitive eating that originally aired Thanksgiving weekend last year will be rerun on Thursday at 9pm on CBS. Here is the synopsis of that program:
706. Dog Eat Dog (Oct 26 2006)
An obese man is found dead in a Dumpster outside of a restaurant on Thanksgiving and his hands are filled
with mashed potatoes. The investigation leads Grissom and Catherine into the world of competitive eating.
Across town, Nick and Sara probe the deaths of a husband and wife on the verge of divorce who were
apparently attacked by a vicious dog. A golden retriever is found at the scene, but he hardly seems
like a killer.
Food Battle Stadiums #3 was held this weekend in Japan. Gal Sone did not eat at that event, but served as the contest MC. She was late which resulted in the entire program being delayed 30 minutes. Nobuyuki Shirota and Tomoko Miyake ate in exhibitions but did not participate in the main contest.
Yahoo news has a slideshow of a salo (pig’s fat) festival in Lutsk, Ukraine. A salo eating contest was held in which Volodymur Stregalin ate a kilogram of salo in 25 minutes. A 141 foot long salo sandwich was also assembled during the festival.
Thanks Brian Seiken. Wing Tut has a blog entry about the Whoopie Pie Contest The top 3 finishers in that contest:
Ian “The Invader” Hickman – 36
“Gooey” Sean Gordon – 22
Local Contestant – 18
Updated Wing Tut did not compete in that contest, but received results relayed by Ian Hickman, who is expected to attend the Denny’s Beer Barrel Pub UEPA gathering on Nov 4.
The United Eaters of Pennsylvania will have a new possible road trip destination in several days. nj.com has a column about Bill “El Wingador” Simmons which says the five time Wing Bowl champion’s restaurant, El Wingador’s To Go, is expected to open November 1 at 4th and Girard in Philadelphia. The eatery’s menu wil feature “Home-cooking, Cuban sandwiches, Spanish dishes, pork dishes, and, of course, jumbo wings.” Bill Simmons says he does not plan to try for a sixth Wing Bowl title, but he is still doing eating challenges. He recently won $1000 of free pizza and set a record of 19 minutes for the 6 pound pizza at the 3 Brothers Pizza at Ocean City.
Youtube has a clip of Natsuko “Gal” Sone eating 300 pieces of fried fish. Japanese videos generally do not last very long on youtube, so if you have any desire to watch that, you should see it soon.
The Heart Attack Grill’s news page says that the Center for Nursing Advocacy is attempting to organize picketing for that restaurant in which customers will be handed a pamphlet protesting the nurses outfits the restaurant’s waitresses wear.
The video from the Jackson, MS Krystal qualifier is now available. The video shows what appears to be the start of Justin Mih’s reversal at the end of the contest, but Erik Denmark’s reaction to it has been edited out. Crazy Leg Conti had an impressive last second surge, eating four burgers in about the last ten seconds, which has been overlooked due to the contest controversy.
Not only will the Krystal Square Off finals be televised on ESPN2 on October 28 at 4pm eastern, 1pm Pacific, it will be followed by reruns of the two other televised contests: The Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating contest finals and the Johnsonville Bratwurst contest. The Krystal Square Off finals will be rerun on Oct 29 on ESPN at 3pm eastern, noon Pacific.
I was afraid that the Krystal Square Off program would be preceded by a game that would run long and eat into the broadcast time, but a college football scoreboard show is scheduled before, so if the noon football game runs long, the scoreboard show will be truncated and the Krystal Square Off should start as scheduled.
The new poll asks who you think will improve the most in the Krystal finals over his or her qualifying performance.
My web hosting company had a database crash last night, rendering this website unusable until they restored backups from Wednesday. I will try to restore the posts from the past two days, but the comments from that time are unfortunately lost in all probability.
updated I have restored what I can. The starts of the lost comments can be viewed with google blog search.
The Wave Magazine of Silicon Valley has an interview with Joey Chestnut. Joey declares himself the greatest American eater and is quoted as describing pre-Kobayashi competitive eating “pretty much a joke.†Eaters who debuted before 2001 would probably disagree with that statement.
Erik “the Red†Denmark has a blog entry about his participation in the Jackson, MS Krystal qualifier and Justin Mih’s disqualification from it. The Hangman noted that somebody named “Tanker†from NYC wrote a forum post on the Krystal Square Off qualifier in Perry, GA claiming that Justin Mih should have been disqualified for dunking his buns too long. The contest video can be viewed at krystalsquareoff.com. The Hangman and Loren “Bubba” Yarbrough ate next to Justin Mih at that event.
