The Rafu Shimpo, a publication for Los Angeles Japanese Americans, has an article about last Saturday’s gyoza contest which contains an interview with Sonya Thomas. Sonya claims that her stomach capacity is now up to 18-20 pounds and that she never gets full. There is a funny picture of Queen of Nisei Week loooking at Sonya in disbelief. Joey Chestnut says he will do the rib contest in Reno on Wednesday.
(Thanks Ian Hickman) Don “Moses” Lerman’s article in Esquire, in which he describes what it is like to eat butter competitively, is available online at msn. A brief clip of Lerman eating butter in the Glutton Bowl is available on youtube.
(From Loren “Bubba” Yarbrough) A video podcast of Loren “Bubba” Yarbrough and Larry “the Legend” McNeil in a 3 minute Krystal burger contest on the Noonan Now show is available.
The Cibola Beacon’s calendar has a preview of tomorrow’s jalapeno pepper eating contest at the Sky City Casino. The contest will start at 4pm local time. The top five eaters will receive Acoma pot (which I assume is short for pottery) in addition to a cash prize.
In his most recent blog entry, Kobayashi says he is resuming lifting weights. It will be interesting if he weighs more than the 172 lb. he weighed at the 2005 Krystal Square Off contest in Krystal Square Off III.
While two competitive eating movie projects will not reach the theaters until at least 2007, “Beerfest”, a movie in which an American beer drinking team tries to win a German contest, opens today. gwinnettdailypost.com reports that one of the drinking team members is also a competitive eater.
Don “Moses” Lerman maintains his guarantee that he will win tomorrow’s jalapeno contest at the Sky City Casino in Acoma, NM even after reports that the contest field might be stronger than expected.
The new poll asks what your opinion on the best competitive eating television program originally televised between July 5, 2005 and July 4, 2006.
The Krystal lovers blog reports that Sonya will appear in Sunday’s Krystal qualifier in Chattanooga. She won that event in 2004 and 2005, winning last year’s contest by a single burger.
The preliminary qualifiers started today with Josh Neal having the best performance with 12 Krystals in 2 minutes. The calendar for the Chattanooga prequalifiers and qualifier lists the times the contests will be webcast.
competitiveeatingnews.com has an announcement that Eric “Badlands” Booker has retired from competitive eating. Neither badlandsbooker.com or Booker’s myspace page have any mention of Booker retiring and Booker’s myspace calendar says he intends to defend his Buffalo Wing Festival title Labor Day weekend.
If Booker has competed in his last eating contest, the competitive eating scene will defenitely miss one of its greatest champions who had a career spanning almost a decade during which he helped raise the profile of competitive eating as much as any other American gurgitator. Hopefully Booker will continue his pre-contest rapping.
There is an article about Joey Chestnut in his college paper, the San Jose State Spartan Daily.
A Krystal press release announces that first Krystal Square Off preliminary round will be webcast today along with the opening ceremonies. Contests can be viewed at seen at krystalsquareoff.com
The Big Texan steakhouse in Amarillo, TX, famous for its 72 ounce steak challenge, has updated its website hosted at bigtexan.com. Unfortunately, the online database of steak finishers is no longer available at that URL (It had not been updated since early 2005). The database can still be viewed at http://www.houseofapps.com/bigtexan/view.php
A clip of a hamburger eating contest between Natsuko “Gal” Sone and Nobuyuki “the Giant” Shirota has been posted to youtube. The burgers are bunless and covered in foil.
Footage from the “Glutton Bowl”, which originally aired on Fox in 2002, has been uploaded to youtube. The contents include Kobayashi setting the record for eating cow brains in his first US prime time appearance. There is also a brief clip of Don “Moses” Lerman setting his butter eating record and Eric “Badlands” Booker setting the pre-Sonya record for hard boiled eggs.
The Hong Kong standard has an article about Sonya Thomas’ victory at the Whampoa Asia eating contest. In that article, Sonya is quoted as saying she eats almost 10 kg (22 lb.) of food each day. If that is accurate, then Sonya eats her bodyweight every five days. Sonya’s big Burger King meal weighs a good deal less than 22 pounds, so it would be interesting to learn what else she eats to reach that amount.
The new poll asks who the (non-eater) writer of 2005-6 is.
(If there is a non-eater award in 2007 for writers, Dave Shoffner will not be eligible since he has started to compete in events, but he did not compete in the July 5, 2005 – July 4, 2006 period in which these awards are based.)
