Crazy Legs Conti faced off against a Daily Mail employee in a Nathan's hot dog eating contest streamed on facebook video today. George Shea was also present.

2016 Nathan’s finals on ESPN at 3pm

The ESPN schedule for July 4, 2016 lists the first showing of the Nathan’s finals at 3 pm. This will be a three hour tape-delay if the competition has its traditional noon start time, as the countdown counter on nathansfamous.com implies. There will also be three reruns on ESPN2. The July 4 web-streaming schedule for ESPN3.com, which shows the women’s division, is not yet available.

It appears that both ESPN and ESPN2 will be broadcasting tennis from Wimbledon while the Nathan’s finals competitions take place.

Te Waha Nui has an interview with Nela Zisser, who hopes switching to a one hot dog at a time strategy will put her in the top five in the women's division of the Nathan's finals.
On twitter, Tim "Eater X" announced that he will not be competing in Nathan's in 2016. This should result in a tight race for the men's third place in the Nathan's finals.
The New York Daily News has an article about the history of Nathan's Famous which treats the 1916 origin story for the hot dog eating contest as factual. Competition co-founder Mortimer Matz admitted the tale was a fabrication in a 2010 New York Times interview.
In Nela Zisser's video of last month's Nathan's qualifier in Houston, George Shea reuses Crazy Legs Conti's "popcorn sarcophagus" / "David Blaine of the bowel" biography to introduce a competitor around the 4 minute mark. In Sunday's gyro contest, he recycled Allen "Shredder" Goldstein's introduction.
The new poll asks what action, if any, Nathan's / MLE should take regarding HB2, North Carolina's controversial transgender bathroom law. Bruce Springsteen and Pearl Jam have cancelled concerts in the state to protest it and the NBA says it could move the 2017 All Star Game from Charlotte if the law is not repealed. The next Nathan's qualifier will be on May 28 at the Speed Street Festival in Charlotte.

Japanese competitive eaters on “Matsuko Deluxe” show

Takeru Kobayashi appeared on today’s episode of Matsuko Deluxe a show starring a plus-size transvestite. Additional guests include:

  • Takako Akasaka, 3rd place in 2000 Nathan’s and first woman to exceed 20 hot dogs in a Nathan’s July 4 contest
  • Nobuyuki “The Giant” Shirota 3rd place in 2004 Nathan’s and winner of 3 out of 4 Food Battle Club contests

Adrian Morgan's facebook says he plans to attend the Saturday Nathan's qualifier at Memorial City Mall in Houston. Nela Zisser will headline the women's field.
Odds are now available for the 2016 Nathan's finals at Bovada Sportsbook. Matt Stonie (-170) and Miki Sudo (-150) are the favorites. Joey Chestnut (+130) and Sonya Thomas (+110) are underdogs. The over/under for the winner's totals are 63.5 and 39.5.
The St. Louis Cardinals produced a video of the April 16 Nathan's qualifier including interviews with Matt Stonie and Mary Bowers. The video lists the contest announcer's name as "George Shey".

Mary Bowers will seek her first victory in qualifier with multiple women when she faces off against Taylor Coombs. Marlene Wigginton will not attempt to threepeat the women’s qualifier due to her pregnancy.

Marketwatch.com has a graph of Nathan's Famous stock price since 1999, which has increased 1936% in that time period. (At its overall peak in 2015, the price was up 26-fold.) The purse for the Nathan's finals has been $20,000 since 2007. $40,000 has been payed out annually since the addition of the women's division in 2011.
Matt Stonie will be present at Saturday's Nathan's qualifier in St. Louis but will not compete. Juan Rodriguez will look to defend his qualifier title while wearing Chicago Blackhawks gear.

2015-16 Nathan’s qualifier circuit map

A map of the 2015-16 Nathan’s qualifier circuit (contests marked by hot dogs) is posted below which shows how Mid-Atlantic heavy this circuit will be. There will be 7 contests between Charlotte and Syracuse, 2 in Texas and 3 (Nashville, St. Louis, Las Vegas) outside those regions. Areas without qualifiers include the Pacific Coast states, Mountain Time Zone states, Great Lakes states and New England.

Collectively Free, an animal rights protest group that stormed the Nathan's finals stage between the women's & men's Nathan's finals last year, disrupted the Easter Mass service at St. Patrick's Cathedral in New York City. The rationale for the disruption was the use of ham as a common Easter meal.
